Why do people make the schoolboy error of getting a second hand engine fitted, instead of getting theirs rebuilt! eg. the bottom end needs a rebuild, so i will drop an old secondhand Z engine in that i have no idea about its history and think that all my problems are solved forever! whats the difference in price? :tongue_smilie:

I'm only guessing here but maybe a 2nd hand engine for £500 and keeping fingers crossed is a hell of a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild, i could'nt imagine what a complete engine rebuild would cost someone on here could tell us.

Second hand engine fitted from Zedworld is £1800, rebuilt engine is roughly £1500 more from someone who knows what they are doing. So all depends what you are wanting and how much cash you have to spare on a car that probably didn't cost much more than that.

I bought a secondhand engine with turbos for £250 on ebay and changed it myself using the best mix of ancillary and turbos from my old engine and that one. Way cheaper, easier and quicker than rebuilding my old engine and it works fine!

A full rebuild is very costly, even if you rebuild it yourself. But to me its the only way to go if you need one.

Second hand may be good for a short term basis ie to get your car back on the road fast. But building a new one is best way to try getting a more reliable one to last(if done right and serviced properly)

I worked with with Jimmer when he said my engine was fubar'd and we had the choice of two with known history of a professional rebuild done already.... one vouched for by one well known tuner and another vouched for by a well known parts dealer on the site

Most of you know which I ended up with and it's sweet as a nut

Next plan is for Jimmer to rebuild my original and make that better than new and then swap back I'd then keep the other as a spare

You won't go wrong there matey, top fella is jimmer.....

Alz.

I suppose another good thing about a 2nd hand engine is you dont have to run it in, that can be a bit frustrating, on a duel carrageway and an astra van cuts you up, shoots off and your limited to 3000 revs for 1500 miles:cursing:

No running in on mine bud like that,no silly rev limits etc.All i ever say is dont redline it or labour it in too high a gear.I tell everyone that and nobody has ever had a failure. Some spirited driving is good for a new engine it helps bed the rings into the bores better.

So what exactly is involved in an engine rebuild? What new parts are used and what else is done to the engine? And how much does it cost? I understand the sky is probably the limit, but for a basic/standard rebuild I mean. If there is such a thing as basic. Possibly something i'd be looking to have done but no idea as to what's involved, but would defo go this route and not replacement.

Totally agree!-too much labouring and the bores glaze.
