I don't know if there is a definitive answer ?

As yours is UK Spec, and cats were compulsory on UK sold cars after 1992 possibly legally not, but I think the Zed will pass emmisions tests if the car is running as it should.

If you should get pulled for a roadside inspection, possibly you would get done.

For MOT purposes you may be OK, If you keep the cats you can always put them back on for the MOT if the tester gets shirty ;)

SS Japspeed Decat pipes come up on ebay new for £130ish often, and will fit with your standard system (although I think they are for manual only ?).

Unless you have a shorty, the rest of the exhaust system is readily available new and SH, so no need to go custom, unless their prices are good ;)

I was just about to post a similar thread myself as the custom back box has taken it's own life so I figure I'll treat the ol' rocketship to a full new custom system.

The question I have is this. As my car's an '89 it doesn't need cats and I'm considering 'breathing' on it a bit in the near future, I need to know if there's any pitfalls or indeed benefits to removing the cats.

TIA.

after all this i was thinking of just getting the exhasut done after the cats to the exit , but if my cat is slightly buzzing will it effect performance ????/

IMO, if the core's loose, it'll be restricting flow more than if it were sound.

You should establish the reg' date of your car to find out if it legally requires a cat to be fitted. If not it opens up your options a bit, but eBay's full of downpipes for sale with cats attached to them if you didn't want to replace the whole exhaust.

if you cat is rattling its probably just the heat shield . just bend it down slightly and it should be ok

i did this today pal , and it worked :clap:

Can the heatshield be safely removed without risking setting the car on fire when I drive it ?
