Does anyone know how to change the seal at the outout end of the gearbox? The part is nice and cheap, but it seems that it would be a real tricky job.

 

Any tips or tricks to getting the old one out and a new one in? The box is off at the moment so access sould be easier.

dead easy, just pull out the old one and pop in the new one mate!

that's if you mean the output (prop shaft end), the input end isn't much harder, just undo the bolts on the housing around the shaft, remove the housing, pop out the old seal, new one in, but you'll need to replace the paper gasket around the housing too...

when you say pull the old one off (no pun intended:xxx:) how would i do it? There is a circlip too... can i just bend some wire and hook em out or is it a bit more technical than that?

 

or can i just tap the old one back into place?

I don't remember there being a circlip? But yeah, they're just a tight fit, get the old one out however you can, but don't cratch the outer or inner of the box, find a socket the same size as the new seal, smear some oil on it to help, then gently tap it in with the open end of the socket around the edge of the seal...

How did you get yours out? and how bad would it be if i dis scratch/damage anything? would it affect the running or would it just mean that the seal wouldn't work properly?

the same way as the old one :) Pretty certain it's the flat surface with the writing on facing you, picture the inner edge of the seal, you want it angleing inwards and away from you, so the oil will push against it and seal it, rather than sqeezing past it, if that makes sense...

treat it as a cam seal, do not scratch anything! use a pick to "dig it out" and then drift the new seal in making sure it's nice and square. a bit of oil round the edges of the new seal will ensure it slides in nicely

If it cant be hooked out,drill a small hole at 9 and 3 o clock,run some long self tappers in then pull it out by those :thumbup:
