Rear fogs...

Any of you guys wired your stop lights as fogs?

I'm fed up with the Halfords "dangly" fog on my 1990 TT and since all the boot trim is out to do the rear shocks, I thought I'd convert.

Anyone done a "How-to" or at least got any circuit diagrams or hints?

Yes please!

How many relays you I need?

If you can wire up your fogs to your brakes lights. What lights up when you brake with your fogs on

You usually wire the inner pair as fogs only. Jeff has a simple diagram for switching the inner pair as fogs, but using them as brake lights the rest of the time.

I used to right 2 reversing lights as fogs....wired a new switch to the dash (with a red LED/ buld to show when the light are on)...Fog lights should have an illumination of some kind within the dash area, to act as an "ON" warning. Just run new wires if i wanna go that way, it is simple...use 2 red rear bulbs (anythats fit the spec of the old reversing lights wattages etc i mean)....replace the white bulbs for the new red pairs, and isolate then from the reversing lights curcuit, keeping yourself a 12V feed. Once you got that far, just hook up the 12V feed to you ectensions, run it from the boot, to the dash, VIA then neww switch (with LED), then run it back again and hook it to the 12V feed, thus making a break in the circuit for the switch to fill when its on!!..

TOOLS:

phillips driver

Volt meter ( cheap one £15 from B&Q, expensive £150)

some spade type terminals to hook up to the switch, and a crimping tool, or pair of pliers.

Approx 4 meters of wire for 12V.

1 LED switch for dash.

V easy....even it if sounds complex smile.gif

(dare I say that Saabs are similar in that the brake lights are poor) If you use a diode (a big one - from maplins) between the brake light feed and the fog light feed you will find that when you brake your fog lights come on, but when the fog lights are on the brake lights function normally. It's a nice fix on the saabs, but I'm guessing on the Nissan's you have to be carefull where you hook up to not confuse the lights out warning system.

(PS. See I'm not just into slagging off z's or joining to sell mine as other users would have you beleive)

I rewired only right hand reversing lamp to be fog. I added switch to iluminated to the centre console attached the wire the dealer had run to the crappy halfords under bumper lamp unit. I disconnected the reversing lamp feed to the right hand pair of lamps in the centre panel. Pushed in some self adhesive red lamp tape into the inside of the lamps and then reaeembled. Attached fog wire from the switch to the bulb holder and it works ok. The only thing I wish I had done was to use red bulbs rather than red tape. Someday I will fix it.

Link to wiring circuit for fog lights.

Note an illuminated switch is required for Mot purposes (not shown) or if a Uk speedo has been fitted the dashboard light can be used.

Thanks AndyP. My pic wasn't worth it anyway! I thought it was good enough to see the difference between the left reversing and right fog lamp colors. bah humbug.

Got the rear fogs sorted yesterday - much nicer.

Thanks all!
