Not a zed question, but I was wondering if anyone on here might be able to help with a problem I have with my Audi A3.

The alternator packed up on it last week and I have just fitted a brand new alternator and belts, when I started it up, several warning lights came up which did not appear before and having checked the battery with a multi meter it appears the new alternator is not charging the battery.

From what I understand if it was a bad connection to the alternator then it would be overcharging the battery, but mine has no effect on the battery at all.

Is there a fuse to an alternator normally? I have had a quick check of the fuses and can't see anything obvious.

Is it likely to be a faulty alternator or is there something else I could check before taking it apart again?

Thanks,

Alex

was the alternator new or second hand, is possible the internal rectifirer (spelling) has failed. try checking the connections to the alternator for a loose wire, if you can get some one to watch the dash with the car running and wiggle the wires on the alternator, you might be lucky in it being just a bad connection. what ever you do stay clear of moving parts will doing this.

Its a brand new alternator so I am hoping its not faulty and it is something else simple, I tried all the connections and they all seem really tight, I think I read somewhere that if it was a loose connection then the alternator would over compensate and be overcharging the battery, but mine is only reading about 11 volts on the multi meter and I think normally it should be around 13 - 14 volts.
