tapping and power steering belt

hi guys,

does any one no if it possible to adjust the tension of power steering belt, ive just had mine changed recently and if so how difficult is it.

also my car some times makes tapping noise, this usally happens once the engine is warmed and the oil pressure drops to about 10psi. it never seems to occure when it cold, any suggestions?

it's easy though I can't remember if you have to remove the front splash guard (under the car) first. As fot the tapping, I understand the oil pump works at different pressures - the faster the engine speed, the greater the pressure (mine often reads almost zero especially after a long deceleration or at idle after a hot run). The slight tapping could be not enough oil reaching the buckets, oil too thin, or oil too old. If you've only had the car a short time, replace the oil a few times (every 2000 miles) untill you are sure it's got nothing but good stuff in there.

...good luck

hi jack,

ive just recently adjusted the fan belt not so long ago, is it near that? and as for oil ive just had the oil changed about 1 month ago. i think you might be right about the oil being thin as the tapping only occurs when its realy warm, or if ive just given it a good blast.

AKI,

Make sure they used a good oil when they didi the change. I use Millers 10/60 fully synthetic.

I dont get any tapping, and my oil pressure gauge never drops to zero, however hard I have been driving.

...I've recently done all the belts so if I can remember, it's at the bottom on the left when you are standing in front of the car. Lie on the floor and remove the splash guard - you might need to get the front of the car up on stands first. From memory, you need to loosen the pump pivot bolt then play with the adjusting nut untill your belt is tight or loose enough. I recall when I did it I made all of the belts too loose and had to adjust them all (cam belt excluded).

...good luck

Aki, good to hear you managed the fan belt smile.gif

As far as the PS belt goes, this will probably require removal of at least the fan shroud - removal is a bit of a pig if you don't know where the catches are for the bottom part. You'll need a 27mm socket to turn the engine so you can get a 14mm socket through the PS pulley onto its pivot bolt. Next a 12mm socket to undo the adjuster and clamp. Apart from that it works in exactly the same way as the fan belt!
