Rough running engine

I keep getting the same problem with my Z. My fiancee and I both drive it; me more frequently than she. I always get the folowing problem; she never does.

 

After about two hundred miles I get a funny yellow light on the dash; this is followed about 30 miles later by the engine starting to run rough and lose power. I give the car to my fiancee and after she's been driving it a little while the warning light's gone and the engine's running fine again. I think she must take it to somebody for work because I've noticed a £40 ish increase in my credit card bill whenever she has it, not always from the same place. I think this is excellent value for making the car run so well again; I just wish I knew who was doing the work so I could recommend them on here.

Had the same thing myself last week but this time got to 330 miles before that funny light came on. Must have been due to leaving that cruise control thingy on 85 on the moway all the time and resisting the temptation (as much as possible) to welly it evry now and then. Same credit card prob tho

James your lucky, my light comes on when my car has about 5 miles left in it. I call it the, "your f*%cked now" light.

I know mine's got about thirty miles left; i found out the hard way (really did end up with it coughing its way into a local garage on the way to work one day. oops...)

 

WillieO: How the hell did you get 330 miles???? Best I've EVER managed was 250 'til the light came on. Yours a TT or NA? (Incidentally, JeffTT cleared out my throttle bodies at the weekend; equalled my 250 mile duration on the next tank. May be something to do with the TB clean or it may be because I was sat in a queue at 40 for 30 miles; I'll have to see how long this tank lasts.)

When first got the car struggled to get 180 between fill ups.

Cleand TB and replace shagged hoses upto 200

decatted the pipes upto 220

lightened pulley now 240 - 250

 

Soon i'll be able to afford the car!!

330 was a record. Last week on a 700 mile round trip mostly motorway and depended on staying on cruise control! No warp factor stuff - well not much.

Till recently I also struggled to get past 230miles. Still do around town. What has helped was freeing off my brake calipers, cleaning throttle bodies, temp sensor contacts, cleaning K&N filter elements etc.

Mines a TT Auto mega mileage Castrol RS 0-40.

Now that winters almost ending that'll help too - even got the lids off on sunday!

Though about putting the 1.8 diesel from my old Pug 306 in it. Stay below 80 (mainly because I don't think it wil go any quicker!) and the ecenomy should be fine smile.gif...

 

Incidentally, I live on a 25 tonne barge. Only manages about 5kts (30HP 1940s 3 cylinder diesel) but it goes a LONG way on few drops of diesel. Was thinking about putting the Zed engine in it (specially if I put the Pug engine in the Zed!) and speeding things up a bit. 25 tonnes of steel doing 30mph up the Thames could be interesting biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

talking about mpg are we? i have a 1991 ski nautique comp waterski boat, it is fitted with a 351 cubic inch (5.8 Lt) 260hp ford V8 Wessex lump it does 15 gallons an hour on open throttle. we got to ski for one day on about £80.00. it is now gas converted and our daily cost is £25 to £30 per day (no road duty on marine lpg and price is 28.9p per Lt, it was year b4 last only 18.5p LT gas conv is bi pointless 4 Zs as you loose 10% power and increese in consumption of 5%. but where would u fitt the 100Lt tank in the glove box!
