Valve re-seating

Hey all

any tips on regrinding the 24 valves??!!! just wanted to know if there is any surefire way of knowing you have done it right.

i thought as the engine is apart i may as well do it.

24 valves, how boring?!!! still i worked out that if i start on a monday, do 2 valves a day, then i can have sunday off!!!!!!

Unless your engine has done a very high mileage then I'd expect the valve seats to be in pretty good condition, therefore you will only have a small amount of work to do. I have done this many times, on other engines, and unless you are re-cutting the valve seats, then it only takes a couple of minutes each to lap them in.

cheers andyp

do you think i should just use the fine paste to grind with? or coarse as well?

how do you tell if you have done it properly?

i have done it before on a 16v astra but have forgotten a lot!

That would depend on the condition of the seats and the amount of material you need to remove. Unfortunately, I'm tempted to say that if you're not sure then you shouldn't be doing it ! Have a look in the manual, it will normally state the width of the 'seal' between the valve and the seat - you just want to make sure that the seal is good.

cheerz andy. i get what you mean but if i dont give it a go i'll never learn!

this is my first time taking apart a Z engine.

cheers for your help m8

When I pulled my engine, my Father insisted I lap the valves in. He did 2 and showed me, I did the rest. Start with the coarse paste. You will find this 'scratches' the valve/seat quite a lot. Not to worry, switch to fine paste and keep grinding until all of the pitted areas have dissappeared and gone a grey colour. Make sure no lapping paste gets onto your valve stem at all!!!!! Put some oil on it though for a bit of lube.

When finished, THOROUGHLY clean off all valves/seats. This is probably the most important part. Carborundum paste does an engine no good at all.

Hope this helps,

cheers for that m8, i thought it was like that. just trying to remember!
