ordered some stuff from Z1 came to about $240 and the import duty bill was £17.50

Hi and who do you pay the duty to [ courior ?? ]

Take you item total plus your shipping cost (all usually in $) convert to £ then times the lot by 5% (duty) then this total by 20% (vat) this is a very rough calculation that we base most our import goods on hope it helps.

Usually get billed after by couriers, although parcelforce/royal mail tend to ask for payment before delivery and will contact you first.

Ps always make sure you ask for items to be shipped door to door otherwise you could end up with a lot of nasty airport charges.

yeah they usually deliver the stuff then a week later get a invoice for duty/taxes charges from FedEx, but they have rang me before and pay it over the phone.
