Joy Oh Joy me Z's back and running fine, the alternator is fixed.

Just for the record I was charged 2hrs labour, one to get if off and one to put it back on, (this included a lift back to my house by the mechanic). Reconditioning the alternator, (jap import), £140 plus v.a.t.

 

The best news is that this is covered by my Breakdown Insurance so I expect to get most of it back. (The insurance aonly allow 1hr labour for the job).

Hi Simon,

Can i ask what the problem was with your alternator? Mine makes a annoying noise, it still charges the battery though. Is this the problem you had ?

And that was the problem - 18.5V as measured across the battery whilst idelling. It was either the votlage regulator or the diode pack, both of which ar part of the alternator. These both were replaced for £140 +v.a.t. - better than a new one at £260 + v.a.t as quoted to me.
