fixing water pump & timing belt gets me more trouble !!!

'For christ sake'

Had the Z in for water pump, timing belt,A/c belt, alternator belt, tensioner, oil & filter ex.Started it up out side the garage, within seconds it stalled.

The mechanic came out to it and we got it running, with the aid of the battery boost, even though i did'nt think it needed it.It was turning over normaly

Drove two minutes home, had a bath got back in the Z for a test drive(would not start).

Eventually it started, went down the motorway & it broke down.Got the AA out the guy was quite helpfull he found a reading at the plugs & the injectors & checked the relays to the fuel pump. What could the monkeys have disconnected in order for me to get this problem?????

We eventually got it back by waiting ten or fifeen minutes for it to start.

When we started it for the last time it run badly as if the PTU was playing up,what could it be...??? DO i get the shotgun out!!!!!!!!!!!! mad.gif

Anything i can check myself before monday mad.gif

Commiserations dude ..... it might be something obvious in the daylight 'tho ..

Go and roll a phat one and chill the fuck out!! wink.gif

Dude,

Get the fuck off this forum,it's for 'Zs' only not for the faint headed supra DUDES rolleyes.gif

Speak to you tomorrow wink.gif

To get to the timing belt the garage will have disturbed the PTU and the CAS, both of which could cause these symptoms (ignoring the jump start bit). Have a close look at those connections in daylight.

Andyp,

Where is the CAS what does it do?. confused.gif

(p.s)when i get back on the straight & narrow i'll send the clock to ya. smile.gif

Regards KEN

CAS - Crank Angle Sensor

It's the round silver thing on the right hand side (looking at the engine) exhaust CAM - under and to the left of the intercooler->throttlebody pipe.

It tells the ECU what position the cams are at, so the ECU knows when to fire the spark plugs & injectors (the fuel pump also wont run unless the ECU knows the engine is turning - this is so that in a crash, the fuel pump shuts off and doesn't potentially empty the fuel tank into the hot engine bay).

The connector is on the right hand side, might well be worth taking it off and cleaning it up, and then putting it back on again - same with both PTU connectors.

Ken Ken Ken.why did you leave the place of repair if not all working ok?

This clearly illustrates that shit work is shit work is shit work, sorry but I can think of no good or justafiable reason that the mechanic let you go concidering the amount of work you had done and at I assume even if competetive a lot of cash if the vehicle was not 100% I give up! maybe my standards are too high?

Some one posted a while ago that if I was to do the same kinda job and the belt snapped damaging the engine after, as I am not a fully fledged rip em off aim low charge high establishment where would that leave the customer.Credibility is earned and this pisses me off when advise offered is ignored.

Now here you may have a Ptu problem internal or connection wise but you prove it was ok before! I would not allow a vehicle I have worked on or had worked on to be released to a customer or back to myself unless its 100%

Mechanics that think otherwise are a danger to the industry the customer and road users, how did they think a boost start was ok if the engine was turning over ok.. points to a problem straight away jeeez where do these places get off.

Fancy having some work done on your brakes by these guys??? "oh sorry guv dont mind the job been only 90% correct do you?"

90Mph+ M6 guy pulls out arghh ! just when you need that extra 10%

Get them to sort it they busted it!!!

Ps Ask Cos & Dean what kinda service they had yesterday?

Aaron,

Taken off the PTU connectors & the CAS,they look ok. smile.gif

The car runs for s few minutes then it runs out of petrol, this must be something to do with the CAS.It does'nt look like it's been adjusted.Would the monkeys have moved or taken this off???? frown.gif

Anything else 'anybody' smile.gif smile.gif

cheers Ken

Jeff,

Sounds like it could be your PTU or an electrical problem, often cables and connectors are removed to allow access to the timing gear panel retaining screws. If the cables are loose or have been knocked about, it can cause you a few problems. The circuitry inside the PTU is temperature sensitive and ocassionally the connectors can crack if the unit is dropped or treated harshly. This results in high temp hesitation or stalling as the loose or cacked connectors expand when hot.

It is not the CAS as the engine will not start at all if it is misaligned.

It is probably a loose connection somewhere in the bonnet.

Try this:

Let the engine cool down completely, disconnect the CAS and PTU wiring and make sure it is all clean and dry. Then disconnect the starter and ignition electrical connector next to your break fluid resevoir, driver side next to top of bonnet. Clean and reconnect, then try to start then engine.

Hope this helps!

Don't say I didn't warn you about garages and cheap mechanics. I recommended you did it your self alone or with some friendly help from an advanced member of this forum who knows what they are doing. Its not a question of money, its the satisfaction that you know it has been done properly and no short cuts have been taken.

Best of luck.

Amer.

I totally agree with you 1000% there is no point doing something if you are only going to half do it and cock it up. Either do it professionally to the max or dont touch it all.

Some mechanics are too hapy to cut corners or treat engine parts and panels like crap, tossing them about the place with no idea of what is attached to them and what damage could be caused.

That is why I would rather give up a whole weekend (as a surgeon I only get 2 weekends off a month) and work on my car myself, than give it to a garage. It probably costs me more that way (parts, tools and a wasted weekend), but then I know when i'm throwing the car into corners or overtaking at red line it is going to come through for me and keep me out of hospital.

with servicing and repairs its not a question of money, its so I know its been done properly.

Am it talking rubbish or do you guys agree?

Amer.

Amer,

Agree agree agree i've learnd my lesson the hard way.I hope all the years i own my Z i get to a stage where i can say "do it your self"

What a waste of a weekend for me,i would have been better snaking it through my self, but you life & learn....
