as some of you may have seen we got a little akita puppy. anyone got any tips on training him? so far i can get him to sit, chase and return his toy and he goes to the door and does the toilet on his mat still not peeing on it though lol has only really been 2 days mind you lol

Sounds like you've done well. I would see if there's any local training clubs to you just to get the basics. I personally think the recall and sit is really important cos he's gonna be a big dog and you need to have total control ;)

Agree on the recall i know first hand people dont take kindly to a dog charging at another at over 30mph freindly or not lol

good that he is using the pad some dont pick it up that early, you can buy a bottle of solution in pet shops that smells similar to dog urine if you use dropletts of this on the pad it supposedly encorages the dog to urinate on it too!

yeah my sister suggested that solution stuff she used it on her dog but she has no patience and gave up the dog is a year and a half now and still terrible for peeing.

its worth a try as does work in allot of cases, others have used the old rub his nose in it notion as in take him to the pad if he has done it there before not that i approve of that

we used a similar tactit with our youngest where after a brief accident we would take him to the pad and say no in a firm voice after a few times i think he realised ok so i do it here then lol!!

let us know how you get on, also a set (timed) walking routine can help

yeah we dont approve of that either. what we have been trying is when he does a pee soak a little up on the mat before we clean it up. once he gets his jags we will start taking him walk but its just with me in the garden the now took him out there and he done the toilet so gonna try take him in the morning again and after his dinner tomorrow then last thing again hopefully he starts picking it up

yeah im sure he will mate and yes we done the same as in regular trips to the garden until the jabs then similar times for walks :)

Remeber its as much praise as it is telling off, once the basics are done it is then time to teach the other half, i had lots of trouble with riddick as shell would treat him as a kid and not like the animal he is, he got very protective of shell, and its a lot more cruel to have to put an uncontrolable dog down than giving it a quick clip and a stern voice for disobeying

Sounds harsh but as soon as he pees rub his nose it !! With a firm NO!! & take him straight to his mat .. Also if he's peeing in the same area put the mat there & day by day slowly move the mat closer to the back door & eventually outside .. I've had lots of dogs over the years (haha no comments. )& this always works! Good luck

Also remember to use the word toilet when he goes. It's all about association with dogs. Once he knows the words and has got the link in his head, he'll hopefully go outside when you say "want toilet".

Totally agree with Alan, got to be firm but fair. As stupid as it may sound, I hate dogs with no manners. I know it's not their fault, it's the owners who couldn't be bothered. I love my dog to bits but wouldn't think twice about telling her off and she knows it. It just means I have a dog I can control with the tone of my voice.

just back from the vets with him there for his first jags and she was very pleased with him making some more progress with him today when i got up with him this morning he had only done a pee on the puppy mat and wanted to go out so took him out and he done the toilet outside again. also he is listening alot more when i tell him no for doing things like trying to get my internet cable lol so seem to be making a little progress each day

Another command to get him used to from day one is the leave command. One thing I've done with both my dogs is to take their dinner away. I'd tell them to "leave", take their dinner away for a minute or two, then let them have it back and say "take it". The idea is to give them the mentality that leave means once they've given something up, it's ok cos they're going to get it back ;)

You probably already know this, but Akitas need to be mastered, lovely dogs (I have one), but very strong minded and they want to dominate everything! I am soft as muck with my dog, but equally she knows I'm boss when it matters.

They tend not to be good with other dogs so mix it as much as poss now and they get very possessive and protective with age.
