My dads always been into finding old stuff, fossils, metal detecting etc, and I guess growing up around it I've always been interested.

Anyway the other week when I was off roading down an overgrown public byway I noticed half-buried bottles kicking about in the overgrowth. I went back a week later and found that I seemed to have stumbled across an old bottle dump from 1940s -50s. :detective:

Looking on the internet, theres a huge following for finding old 'junk & bottles' but it also seems that what I found may just be the tip of the iceberg as the same locations may have been used from middle of the 1700s onwards. Just wondered if anyone else had any experience with it? or maybe you lot aren't as sad as me :whistling:

shame you spelt friend wrong

Dude im a collector, I used to go all the time when I could find somewhere to go. Have a bit of a dig and take some piccies and I will tell you what age it is. Normally the older stuff is lower down. Look for thick deep green glass as well as blue glass and bits of clay pipe and marbles in the tops of old codd bottles. Could have found a decent spot and if its good it would be worth digging and selling the stuff.

Anything after Victorian aint really worth digging though as it is not worth anything, Clear glass is crap basically.

I love History I have just bought two complete roman Hoards of coins from Israel. One is 14Kgs and the other one is 8Kgs probably around 11-12000 roman coins in total. Should be here in the next three weeks just waiting for export approval out there. I will need to start cleaning them by soaking them in Olive for for a few months.

Thanks Martin, will take some pictures and get them posted, I had a feeling you'd be into it! :thumbup1:

whats a codd bottle, heard that quite a lot?

you'll have to post some pics up of the hoards when they arrive, I take it you'll be displaying them? I'm off detecting with my dad probably next week and I'm pretty excited about it, always wanted to go. Only been once before, found a few medieval buckles and a nero sestertius which is huge for a roman coin, although its worn well so not really worth anything lol

Bazz all the Romans look warn bud before you clean them, most show no details at all but clean up ok.

Soak your coin in Olive oil with a little lemon Juice and every few days check it. You will be surprised how they come up, 99% of the roman stuff looks like uncleanable slugs but 2000 of crap will come off showing a coin inside. The hoards I am going to clean a few bits up, keep a bit and stick the rest on ebay as uncleaned lots.

Will post some pics when they arrive!

A codd bottle is an old lemonade bottle, basically in the days of bottles and corks before they had screw caps the pressure used to push a marble inside the bottle against the lip to hold the contents in.

I go metal detecting most weeks with one of my mates from school,

In my line of work we're always digging up old bottles.

One of my lads sold a clear bottle with a blue-neck on flea-bay for about £150 the other day. Doubled his day's wage in one lucky glance!

Needless to say, I'm a lot more observant when it comes to bottles now!
