These engines have timing chains, with that millege I would want to make sure it's been done. Also check for lumpy idle once warm, diagnostics on a beema is a pain especially when you are trying to figure out the reason for the idle issues. I've had this problem on the Wifes Z3 BMW and also on my E39 BMW. You end up chaning all the sensor as the diagnostics tells you it's one thing then you get that fixed and it starts blaming something else.

So in summary , the usual checks, plus service history to check timing chains, plus lumpy idle check.

That Audi will wipe the floor with the beema in your first post.

I'm a big BMW fan, but for the money I would go with the audi. :(

cheers bud, very helpful

I love the look of the Audi and the performance looks more up my street too but I'm keeping an open mind as I've never even sat in either let alone driven - this would be my first foray into anything German, I've been strictly Jap for a while now!!

I would have the A3 anyday over the bm. I found the E36 have a horrid driving position and the dash and doorcards etc are really cheap.

What i dont like about the audi is when you put the clutch in. it goes into the floor so it leaves you foot flat on the floor if you know what i mean. It feels really odd but im sure you would get use to it?

cheers chuck, will be starting my research this weekend :cool3:

While Im also a Bmw fan, I would go for the Audi. The A3 is a much newer car design than the e36 and the 1.8T is a great little engine.

I had an A3 company car many years back...my only gripe with it was rear seat leg room. I could not get babyseat in it behind me....but then I am 6'2

I prefer the look of the Audi too. I'm 5ft 3 so rear leg room is rarely an issue when someone is sat behind me lol! And my daughter is only 4 so it'll be a while before she needs more room.

hopefully I'll see some cars in the flesh this weekend. Another contender is the Golf, hoping to see some of those too

well the mrs has an audi a3 1.8t and i have a bora (v6 4 motion)

the audi is a fantastic car and good on the petrol 40mpg on a run, the bora has more space but uses a fair bit more fuel -32mpg on a run

both are built very well and apart from a few lights that have come on on the bora both are great (around 130k each)

the bora you showed has the 5 cylinder engine and only returns similar mpg to the v6 with less power.

i would have the audi, but not a modified one

lexus looks nice but high mileage

Cheers, all useful to know thanks!

Is that high mileage for a Lexus? Toyotas go on and on don't they?

Ye Lexus pretty reliable so high mileage not really an issue. Altho I would say I have driven the is 200 and altho its a nice car wouldnt be my choice as find it very revvy...feels like needs another gear..even tho has 6..but really any car I have driven is not really any match to my z so maybe its just me :)

I like the Lexus :) looks very tidy. I think as long as there is paperwork with services carried out for the mileage then it shouldnt be a problem

Cheers Lisa, only too aware that NOTHING is gonna match up to Zedward :pinch:

Any yay for there being another woman on here

Going to test drive a couple of VW Boras, some Golfs and beemers tomorrow....

Might possibly get a chance to see this tomorrow, got quite an extensive short list to see tho, so it could be Sunday..... :flowers:

that BM is over priced. i just sold my run-about e46 2000 shape 318ci coupe for 1800. and that was nice in black, staggared M3 wheels, tints etc

the prices of e46 bimmers are really falling (besides certain variants) so id look for those, great cars to drive
