Just shook hands on a deal for my GTO £2095 now i have been looking at a few other possibilities and would like the forums views. Nowi cant see me driving around in a 1.1 fiesta as thats just not me. I have my zed that im building big spec but that is going to take some time and im quite happy to take it nice and slow to get it right. Ok then choices in the poll what do you reckon folks?

Skyline..

Skyline was the best car I've owned to date (not had the zed long enough to prove itself, yet). I had an R32, my mate has an R33 runnin about 300bhp - both were very good and reliable cars (much more so than a zed it seems). RX7 is a great looking car but those ****el rotor tips are too fragile, no torque and drink fuel. Shame really. S14 Silvia/200SX maybe?

I'm sure if you go on the skyline club there are a lot of people on there with problems. the thing with using a forum as a reliability checker is that people mainly post about problems with their cars. not how good its been and how they haven't had to do much to it recently. so bad indication to be honest, not only that, these cars are now pushing 20 years young, so things are bound to be on the way out.

as much as i love skylines. id still pick a good zed over one. they just look so much better and have more of a presence on the road than a skyline. sure you get a look when in one. but not half as much as when your in a Zed in the summer with the roof off.

I agree with the RX7 comments. nice car but drinks a lot of fuel with the rotary engine.

Have you thought about the mitsubishi GTO?

LOL - you're having a bad day obviously!

Yeah, skylines can breakdown like any other cars - but generally the RB25DET is less complicated and easier to maintain than a VG30. Just don't see the point of having 2 Zeds - even if I do love em.. (sorry Gaz).

LOL Ian i just sold my Mitsubishi GTO :confused1:

He just sold his GTO.

I'd look at another zed, finding a nice one might be a bit of a pain that without spending big ££££'s.

200sx as said, or a BMW E36!

Depends what you use it for.

If you want a car to use everyday, but a bit fo fun, a 328i sport is a safe bet.

I assume you dont want a project car, as youve got the zed, i'd say go N/A!

Yeah already got the TT LWB as my project hence why i thought. It seems the price on zeds is on the up as well. I have seen a swb that needs a couple of bits doin and its a NA so im not too sure

Also a slicktop TT going that needs a little bit doin to it ah i dont know

When i said N/A, i wasn't talking Zed's, just cars in general. Turbos bring more hassle.

Youve already got one, so something cheaper to run for a second car i's say.

I think i would probably go for one of the TVR, one of the Porsches or the old school M3.

way to many BMW's on the road to be honest, but if you want to go for a BMW, at least get something classy like a 840

Mate.... one of my all time faves.... just stunning and you dont see many about either.

I had an L reg skline R33 GTST, it was an auto but sounded great, looked the part and was very reliable (apart from skidding into a kerb on ice) sold it for £1700 so they can be got for cheaps

I was thinking of one insted of the soop, anything to look out for??

BMW 840?

Don't get me wrong - I like the 8 series too, but for about £2k yer man ain't gonna find a tidy one. If it needs any parts or (shudder the thought) a diagnostics at a BMW garage then it'll blow several hundreds of hard earned without a second glance. Stay well clear is my advice.

Stick with something Japanese.

R33 is a pretty robust car. Engines that have been well maintained and not excessively tuned should be bomb proof. And, as mentioned earlier, it should be realistic to get a half decent one for the budget mentioned on the thread starter.

Car Mad - some things to check

1) Turbo (the obvious)

2) 2nd Gear in 'box difficult to locate/engage (especiallly when cold)

3) Rust under rear arches

These are a few of the common problems with skylines. Generally though, to a Zed owner, these cars are pretty simple. There's nothing particularly obtuse or well hidden that will catch you out. Straight sixes are great engines, way better than a V IMO. If you can spot a lemon generally, you should be fine when viewing an R33.

Cheers

Yellow slicky n/a manual, VERY pretty any good far ya?! :winkiss:

Another vote for the 840 :tt1::tt1:

scooby's? or if you want to be less common an evo? practical and very reliable. Or a N/a manual skyline? i have the r33 manual, 6 cylinder, still shifts, but does the mpg when you drive tidy and like most skylines it still turns heads. I recently bought a scooby too, and tbh, never seen why people like them, now i have one, there alot of fun and are getting very cheap these days, and probably the best car (in my eyes) to drive every day to and from work.

???? Damn ugly really that 8 series? Much preffer a nice 5 series for the money.

or a M3 or 328? also good fun and i think can look very smart.

I think scooby got really common during the late 90s and due to that put me off for life. I think skylines are a rare car to see on the roads along with the zed. Most seem to be for sale in Scotland or Wales

I have seen this skyline in Cornwall let me know what you think and if anyone is close could they check it out pretty please :)

yes i know scoobs are common, but there must be a reason? because there good? and if your on a budget (like me) and want a reasnobly fast every day car (like me) then the scooby made sense, i dont want to be repairing it every two minutes like the zed,

However!!, if i did have the cash, i'd probably be tempted to get that skyline too! it does look nice, its the same colour as mine too, which i hate, which is why its off the road and getting re-sprayed when my old man gets round to it. Its still looks like a nice example though.
