Vibration

I've got a 90 TT Auto import which is vibrating at speeds over 60mph. I've got new HICAS axle bearing, new shocks, new bushes and t-bar, new pads and calipers and the wheels have been balanced recently.

Also, the car often 'clicks' (I can feel this through the floor of the car) as I pull away.

Might this be the U-joints or centre support bearing? or anything else?

It's not a major problem but just want to keep the car running smoothly.

Thanks in advance.

It could well be the centre support bearing - that's a very common failure on these cars, which in turn can cause the driveshaft UJ's to wear.

Try and get under the car and see if there is any visible up & down play in the driveshaft, if there is, then try replacing the centre bearing. If the vibration goes away - fantastic.. If not, there is a procedure described in the service manual (I believe) of rotating the driveshaft mount by 90 degrees at a time..

I have a feeling someone else here has done that very procedure recently, so they will be able to shed more light - it's not something I've personally done.

Thanks I'll let you know how I get on.

Darren?

...I've just changed a centre support bearing with no real effect. Also rotated prop to diff through 90 degree increments (road test between each) with no real effect - ie the vibes are still there - although they feel different. Sorry - I've just remembered why I'm replying - it's this... the vibrations (on mine) are most noticable at slow speeds when the car has been standing for a couple of days. You say it's at over 60mph. At these speeds the vibes on my car (also 90 jap auto)are not very noticeable. Have you checked the front tie rods, these would give you the problems you describe. A tip that worked for me in getting rid of impossible to find creaks and clicks and clunks was to lubricate all moving suspension parts - shocks included - with silicone lubricant (Halfords yellow tin). In fact wherever metal meets rubber give it a squirt. Works wonders. My jap was 10 year old when I got it and it needed lubricating - all had gone dry.

good luck
