Hi guys,

I had my new wheels fitted today by a reputable tyre fitting company,

I purchased these from a club member and they were supplied with 2 spacers for each side for the front wheels, they are 8.5 s, i had them balanced as well but over 50 mph i get a lot of vibration/ shaking.

Any ideas to what is causing this would be much appreciated,

Thanks

Chris

alright chris , how you doing bud .

if your car was fine before new wheels and spacers were fitted i,d get them off and check everything is seated properly . ie spacers . when my new tyres were fitted got them all balanced up and thought they would be bang on . before fitting to the car i got them checked again at a better place and the bloke showed me on the machine that they were a mile out of balance . he redone them and they are perfect now . also have you got your wheels torqued up correctly . 80lbs on the wheel nuts . another possible cause could be the use of wrong nuts . worth checking as its bloody dangerous with the wrong ones .

did they fit your wheels with a rattle gun . if so take em off and refit them . almost certainly too tight and unevenly torqued .

vibration over 50? sounds like unbalanced wheels, did they use the stick on weights? some might of fallen off. get them rebalanced bud.

another possible is your spacers . if they are not hubcentric this will cause issues . if they arnt , take em off and refit ya wheels . if they are hubcentric have you got the right spigot rings fitted?

How bad is it if you over tighten your wheel nuts? I don't have a torque wrench or anything, but i tighten them up pretty damn tight to be honest.

well if you havent got them torqued up correctly , just pulled up to a creak you may have one stud at 100lbs another at 120lbs another at 90lbs and so on . uneven load on the wheel . a perfect recipe for nuts shearing off and warped wheels due to uneven loading , not to mention the risk of damaging the stud holes and ruining your wheels . i remember reading an article somewhere a while back where it said more wheels come off cars at speed due to nut being over/un equaly tightened as opposed to under tightened . a friend of mine many years ago popped round to mine saying his car was shaking a bit . my first thought was your wheels are out of balance . when i looked at his car he only had one nut left on out of four . the other three had sheered off without him knowing . i suppose the shaking started after the third one went . it took 2 of us with a wheel brace to undo the last one . must have been a good couple of hundred pound on that nut .

Not to mention, stretching the stud, so subsequent wheel tightens, can have little to no gripping effect.

Hi Andy,

They put them on with a rattle gun and torqued them up and said come back after 20 miles which i did, when they checked all 4 whells the nuts were loose so they torqued them up again, regarding spigot rings are these fitted to the hub splines , they removed all from the 4 wheels before they fitted the new ones, as to the wheel nuts they came of a 300 so i cannot see thats the problem, they said come back in the morning and they will see if they need torqing again, i have to go to Wednesbury first thing tomorrow hope this will be ok cheers

so how do you get it right then if you don't have torque wrench?

get a cheap torque wrench off ebay for about £20 or so . well worth it mate .

original 300 nuts are for oem wheels . for aftermarket you will probably need different ones . im gonna be in around 12ish noon . if you want to pop over i,ll take you to a place that will check your nuts out (not one of those places either)and we,ll get them torqued up properly at mine

Hi Ian

I have to be at the garage you got your tyres from at 10 mate to get Mari-annes car mot done, do you think it will be ok to go there or should i go back to the tyre place and tell them to take them off and tighten them by hand and then torque them up at 80 lbs as Andy says

Thanks for the offer bud if i have no joy with them i will come over Fri morning

cheerz

this place also stocks spigot rings . £10 a set . if they are missing and you need them its also dangerous as instead of the hub supporting the wheel the studs are . all in all wrong nuts supporting the wheels instead of hubs and also torqued up wrong . impending doom.

give us a bell in the morning 07951 676082

The spacers are flat metal with the holes drilled in them ,will these be hubcentric spacers ? they came of the z which the wheels were on so are these ok ?

no mate . hucentric have to be bolted to the hubs before you fit your wheels . it sounds like there could be a few issues here all with how the wheels are fitted .

i would remove the spacers .

get correct spigot rings

correct nuts

then get them torqued up correctly . even if your balancing is spot on with the other issues its gonna feel wrong . these add up to a safety issue so please no boosting till its sorted

Andy,

the spacers i have are just flat and the slid over the hubs, not bolted on, they removed some rings from the 2 front whhels before they put the wheels on , ARE THESE THE SPIGOT RINGS ?

The spigot rings are the little rings, usually plastic, which take up the gap between your hubs and the inner bore on the wheel.

If they have thrown them away, your wheels will be wobbling about on the studs (More than likely damaging them!). If i were you, i'l be kicking up a fuss at the garage who fitted them.
