How do you confirm that #1 cly is at TDC on the compression stroke?

I've turned the crank until the timing marks are all in the correct place and no.1 is at the top of the stroke, but the marks on the old cam belt don't line up at all :confused1:

What am I doing wrong?

The lines on the belt mate, the pulley marks are all lined up with the ref points on the back plates.

Ah!-you can turn the engine hundreds of times mate before they will line up!

If your at TDC and the ref marks are lining up your fine.

Bear in mind tho' they are only ref marks!

Cool, so if all the marks are lined up I can safely change the cam belt then?

cylinder one, long wooden dowel into the spark plug whole, turn until the dowel moves up and then starts to fall, once it starts to fall turn opposite way until it moves up, then do small rocking movements until you know where the point it doesn't move, this is TDC on cylinder 1.

then note where it lines up in relation to the marks on the covers. and belt. but best way to make sure its at TDC.

Had to do this on my Golf GTI mk2 when i changed the Head gasket and someone rotated the engine for me to what the pistons go up and down with out the head on......barstewards

Finally got the cam belt changed today :cowboy:. The problem I was having was that I could get the left hand sprockets lined to the back plate but the right hand side was slightly out and I couldn't workout why.

I re-read Jeff's thread and realised I was trying to line them up with the back plate ref points.doh

I've counted all the cogs between the marks and they're correct :sweatdrop:

Just got to put the tensioner back on and test it. Hopefully all will be well and I'll have changed my first cam belt :sailor:

I know it's not a big deal but I was terrified I'd screw it up.
