Prop vibration?

Seeing as the other forum is knackered suppose I'll have to post something techy...

U joints? Nico mentioned that if they go you have to goto a single prop. Why?

Where are the U joints/brackets???

I read on carsurvey.org about a guy who had this problem, he mentioned that he'd been trying to get Nelson to sort and eventually after threatening them with legal action via Nelson UK they sorted his U joint/bracket problem out free of charge!

Check out this link to see what I'm on about...

He mentions a factory fault aswell, very interesting!!!

Never read of a factory fault, but AFAIK..

The UJ's are in the middle of the prop, joining the two halfs, the bracket is a bearing which supports the centre (or it flops about!)..

The bearing is known to worn, if you drive it (a lot) while it's (badly) worn, you wear the UJ's (since they weren't really designed for taking up that kind of angle variation at that kind of speed!), the UJ's are not a serviceable part - they are attached to the propshaft..

So if they wear, you either have to replace with a new two piece prop (expensive) or go for a single piece prop (less than nissan, still not cheap, but better balanced than a two piece)..

Even the same previous car - I think that *is* Timmys car! smile.gif

Cheers Az mate, after Ben a.k.a. veilsides posts I sorta figured out that's where the UJ's are!

Best get mine looked at then seeing as the prop is dropped for the gearbox build wink.gif

That's coz that IS my car!!! biggrin.gif

I posted that lot straight after Bob Ford gave me the low down from Arriva.

What makes me laugh is the comments that people made about me buying a lemon. But about six months down the line and a few more people adding their input I'd say the story is a little more even!!! wink.gif

Quite a few of the US guys reporting the same problems at around the same mileage, one guy claiming that a mag. said "Drive it until you hit 65,000 miles, then get rid!"

Sorry to go off topic slightly by the way!

What more can i say - AaronJ got hit the nail on the head - The only other positive point about gettin the Single piece DS is that you can get uprated UJoints on them which ARE servicable if they wear - Nice want in excess of 600 quid for a 2 peice DS last time i look and then 140 quid for the CSB kit and well over 100 quid for the Isolator on the Tranny - You could get a one piece one with Uprated servicable UJoints for around 300 quid.

Like some other guy I read saying that the turbos break down to a problem with the oil seals going west when driven too hard! Muppet! biggrin.gif

But these one piece jobs? Heard mixed feelings about them. Steve E was gonna get one but he no say nothing about it! Mute! wink.gif

Aren't they a mare to get setup right?

is the prop in an manual/auto the same???

My Z is on its 2nd prop and 3rd centre bearing and I still have vibrations. I recommend trying a one peice prop. Steve E did go for the 1 peice in the end and he was impressed - no vibrations at all.

I know that the vibrations on mine are coming through the centre bearing because its bolted to the underneath of the car. A 1 peice removes this.

The end joints on props are slightly different between auto and manual.

IMHO if you do go for a one piece, even though it is balanced from the factory, get it balanced again by a reputable machine shop - especially if it's come across the pond... Even if all they do is spin it up and say "yep, perfect" - you know nothing happened to it in transit..

I've read of other benefits of one piece shafts too, especially softer ones (ally, carbon).. If I recall correctly, they will twist more as the power is applied - effectively soaking up and storing some of the torque of the car, and then releasing that torque as the accelleration dies down.. which IMHO would have a (small perhaps) effect on reducing wheelspin..

Cheers for the prompt reply anders. However, none of the following websites point to any 'prop shaft' type companies:

powertrain.com

power-train.com

powertrain.co.uk

power-train.co.uk

There's a http://www.driveshaft.com (PowerTrain Industries) which is possibly what you're thinking of??? If it is, what do you reckon the shipping costs might be from the states to the UK?

Sorry m8. Driveshaft.com is the one.

I did get a quote once - I don't think it was that much. about $280 + $100 shipping (7-10 days) I think. Give them a call.

Andy

i just had a one piece prop made company called h j chard and sons bristol tel 01179717341 cost 269 hope this helps

Thanks for that Mark - I shall be phoning them later today i reckon. Have you had your fitted, and are you happy there's no more vibration?

I've had a reply mail from Powertrain Industries in the states, they've quoted me $340 for a single piece aluminium one. They also have a $60 core charge.

And....I've had a reply from ACPT, they've quoted me $899 for a carbon fibre driveshaft - thats $2500 CHEAPER than the Mines one!!!

Regards
