I am really struggling to get someone to have a look at my ZX gearbox. I have a 1993 twin turbo automatic and my gearbox seem buggered. I don't know a lot about cars so I am in desperate need of a decent garage to look at my gearbox and give me sound advice regarding getting the issue fixed or replacement gearbox sourced and fitted.

 

My Questions to you guys:

1. for a replacement used gearbox and fitted - how much should i expect to pay?

2. I live in the North West nr Warrington, does anyone know of a reasonable place to take my car to be looked at - I am desperate as no one seems to want to look at a 300zx.

If you are willing to travel to Preston (Leyland) with it a friend of mine Ian is manager at oakwell garage and auto electricians he has rebuilt a few zx's he might be able to help. Tel: 01772 453836 ask for Ian (tell him dave c from Motosave recommended you) he may even do it as private job save you some money

Normally if auto gearbox is goosed your best doing a manual conversion (kits sometimes available in items for sale section - about £500ish) that's what I'm ping to do when my auto box dies

There may be a number of reasons to why your gearbox isnt performing or working as it should. Oil change, blocked strainer, blocked oil pipes.

Do an autobox diagnostic and count the number of flashes. This will give some indication of the problem, follow this guide http://www.zmods.org/index.php?page=at_diag

 

Then post up the result.

 

Gearbox replacement is the last resort and can be expensive, normally best going for a manual conversion for the price of a new box and install.

I think there is a guy called Phil at Blackmoor services who is knowledgable on zeds, but failing that, Zedworld in Tamworth, near Birmingham. HTH

I think i'll have a look at the autobox diagnostics first and then depending on the outcome look to contact one of the recommends above.

 

Must admit a manual convesrion is something that i'm keen to do eventually but didn't want to do yet, but we'll see. Cheers again.

Hallo Jeffro, I thought I'd posted all this info here before but can't find it. Here's some info about TT and NA Autoboxes, what they are and a couple of workshops who know what they are and what to do with them. They are, actually, fairly well-known if you can find a workshop who knows what they're doing with autoboxed (i.e. not just a shaven headed grunt with sucky teeth).

How did the manual conversion go?? Well i hope. Did you sell the auto gearbox that you had? I've only just seen your reply.

 

If i can't get hold of a replacement gearbox very soon then i'm going to go for the conversion myself.
