I was talking to Luke who said to avoid Jap auto gearboxes failing, I should fit an oil cooler under the radiator. Has anyone done this and what sort of oil cooler did you use?. He siad not a week goes by without someone looking for a rebuild.

I have an after market cooler fitted by SE when they did the gearbox rebuild, they insist on it in order to give a warranty on the gearbox. I think the cooler was £249ish and £50ish to fit and put new pipe work to it. The new oil feed pipes are a lot larger bore that the originals as well, you could drop marbles down them without touching the sides :-)

I got my oil cooler from Level 10 in US (www.levelten.com).

It's much cheaper, only $70.

I'll be installing it on the front of the AC radiator.

I have converted to manual gearbox so I will not be needing my SE auto oil cooler anymore. So if you want to cross my palm with silver...its yours.

By the way the oil cooler gets extremely hot even on a very short run - that autobox can sure generate some heat!

Did i mention my autobox is still for sale?

How difficult was the conversion? It's something I would very much like to do.

I thought the little oil cooler in front of the radiator on my Jap Z was a cooler for the auto box??? Is it recommended to upgrade it then?

SE did my cooler. You could do it yourself by taking the existing oil feeds to the radiator cooler and rerouting them to a new oil cooler from from Mocal or similar.

The autobox generates a lot of heat and the cooler in the radiator is too hot from cooling the engine to offer much cooling for the box. So a separate uprated cooler is recommended. It gets very hot - you wouldn't believe it. Also takes some of the strain off the engine cooling system.

Sorry...the little oil cooler low down & in front of the radiator is an engine oil cooler. The auto cooler is integrated into the radiator. Not to be confused with the air con radiator which is in front of the engine radiator.
