Hey folks i have managed to get hold of a manual gearbox which i am going to overhaul as the bearings on it where starting to wear. Is there any helpful aids on the internet or any members that have rebuilt these gearboxes before. Not really gonna be a problem splitting it apart it would just be helpful to know whos brain to pick if i can across any problems.

Cheers

Why do you think the bearings are worn mate?

cos the guy that i got it off told me :) It was removed from a customers car as they got another gearbox to put in as it was making a slight noise. So seeing this bargain i decided to get it rather than it go for scrap

I've got to replace my noisy one with the one sat in my garage, so will also be interested in what you find out.

it might just be the release bearing that is making a noise and would be easy but to make sure im gonna strip it anyway to check out the internals as last thing i wanna do is fit a duff gearbox.

My gearbox is whining like a woman coming on!!!!!! lol. But i just turn my stereo up!!!!

I'd like to think a garage can diagnose a release bearing noise without condemning the gearbox LOL :tongue_smilie:

Well this is the thing from what i could make out it was the owners choice to put a new gearbox and clutch on as they had a spare so i will see what i find and if nothing like this has been posted before i will take plenty of pics of progress.

Any internal bearing fault will show up in an oil examination.Ive repaired loads of truck/van gear boxes in my time, done some car ones too and if in any doubt the oil never usually lies, expect some silver oil in the bottom but if a large amount of oil looks like silver paint you know its serious. Before you pull it to bits youll need special tools,a zed box is not conventional as the shafts run through a common casing and will need to be pressed out.
