Hi all, just something i have noticed after my blast out and quick fix tonight.

Car is a TT SWB Manual 93. cats are still in place and a S/S aftermarket exhaust has been fitted, cat back. In place is a balance box where as both pipes go into the box and out. Both rear cans have no baffle left in and i ripped the last loose pieces out by hand after looking inside them (4" tail pipe).

the drivers side exhaust is hot to touch and burbles nicely. The passenger side is cold to touch and with my hand and ear next to it is only producing a small amount.

Is it possible the balance box baffles have also collopsed?

Could be matey. Is the engine running/sounding on all 6 cylinders?

Al.

Either that or you have a collapsed cat! Or one side has been blown out, eitherway its something blocking the exhaust flow by the sounds of things

yer it all runs perfecto and couldnt run any better. I suspect its blocked tbh but just thought i would run it past you all before i go and have the balance box ripped out and replaced.

Q. i would assume both banks run from the cats into this one balance box, get mixed up and exit through two tail pipes, thats the idea with a balance box? so in my case its exiting my right bank 80% and only 20% left side.

That would then point to the cat.. damm.

If the cat was blocked it would overheat at the cat and run really badly. More likely the problem is at the rear silencer on the passenger side and the balance pipe is diverting the gas from that side is to the drivers side exhaust. You could try blocking it the drivers side exhaust on tickover to see if any gas is forced back to the other side.

It is possible that when you thought you were ripping out loose baffles from the passenger side one all you did was free up the mineral wool sound damping material sometimes used and this has balled up and now almost totally blocked off the passenger side exhaust.

been out for a 170 mile round trip today and never missed a beat so cant be the cat blocked then, i laid on the floor and felt the pipe coming out of the duff side and it was red hot so gases are getting through. I think it must be the balance box, tried also blocking up the good side for a few moments and it did push some of the gases out the duff side but not much.

I can live with it for now, but it look as though i have a fake back box on the passenger side as no vapors come out in a morning on warm up.
