On my way to work today my clutch suddenly stopped working. The pedal goes straight to the floor. Does this mean the clutch has gone or its it a master cylinder or something??

Featured Replies

Happened to me a few years back, the slave cylinder went pop so I had to replace that (£30) and also changed to a braided clutch hose. Is there any fluid under the car?

I cant see any fluid under the car. The clutch is fine when the car isnt running, but as soon as i start the engine the clutch pedal just goes straight to the floor :(

sounds like you dumped your fluid on your way to work have you checked the level? I had a nightmare with mine thought it was the slave cylinder under the car but ended up being the hose with a pin prick hole and you could only see it leaking under pressure. Jack the car up and take a look :)

Which resevoir is for the clutch fluid? I'm completely new to these cars, only had it for a week lol I'm just happy as larry i dont need a new clutch!!

under bonnet right hand rear (as you are sitting in dvrs seat) you will have big reservoir for brake fluid then to the left of that into the centre of the engine is the smaller clutch reservoir right at the back of the engine may be under some wires

have u tried the car again cold i had it with mine as soon as it heated up and things expanded the fluid would start leaking but it was fine with engine off and when it was cold. If this is the case then there is a leak that you will see when it gets hot

Nothing at the pedal hot or cold appart from when the cars not running. I've booked it in to have the slave cylinder replaced so hopfully it should be sorted tomorrow

Had a look and its still full of fluid, pretty much to the top.

Did you remove the lid or just look at the container and see the fluid mark? if the latter, deffo 100% remove the lid to check.

I removed the cap, full to the brim. It is the clear(ish) plastic one that looks similar to the washer fluid right?

Oh strange but i wouldnt say it is the slave cylinder right away. I would try and bleed the system first to diagnose further as unless you know the garage very well they may take you on a bit of a ride

The garage is ok, very reputable place, was recomended by a friend. Its just my luck it would go now though, already got an £800 repair bill for my old car because it needs a new rear axle :( i'm just glad i havn't got a £500+ clutch repair too! lol

Bad News!! Apparently the slave cylinder is fine, but the clutch forks arnt going into the clutch straight (or something like that lol) So still might mean a new clutch

OEM nissan parts are not so bad to buy and should be perfectly fine for a standard car (assuming your car is standard!), assuming that the flywheel is OK it shouldnt be that expensive!

+ labour... to be fair any garage should be able to fit a clutch to a 300zx, exhausts of, propshaft off, gearbox of, replace clutch refit in reverse!

I was once quoted £100 labour for changing the clutch on my M3 evo (basically the same procedure) that was a good price but shouldnt be more than £150 i wouldnt have thought!

How much is not that expencive? lol I know Zedworld charge £520 for the work :(

Inclusive of a clutch presumebly??

Average cost for labour on a clutch job is approx 200-240 bucks in most garages, plus the vat of course unless cash in hand.

When I did my manual conversion, I put the spring clip that holds the clutch fork in place to the input shaft, the wrong way round, it was fine for a bit, but then did nowt as half the clutch fork had slipped off....

Yea, they charge £520 for parts + labour inc. vat

The garage my car is at quoted (very roughly off the top of his head) £250 just for the clutch not including labour, if thats the case i'll get my own damn clutch haha, can get a fast road clutch on ebay for £250 lol
