I have seen a private plate that i like.

Its around £500 and the £80 fee and vat on top. Is the £80 fee for them to sort out all the detials with the dvla etc?? what about my v5

Will i have to buy plates or would they come with the paper work etc?

Also i would need to tell my insurance. what about my tax disc because this will have my old reg on.

Ive never bought one before so i dont have a clue??

cheers :)

Buy it, go to the DVLA office and say you want to transfer it to yours on a date and time and tell the insurance when and the transfer will take place and they'll issue a new cover note from that date and time and then take that to the DVLA and they'll change the tax disc and MOT documents

Bit of a process but worth it the end

See Mine !

I think it would look good on your zed Dave!

the £80 fee is for a plate transfer, Will that be the 1st bit you said tony?

Hi Dave

When you buy the plate, you receive the retention certificate which is your entitlement to use that registration.

Then you obtain a form to assign the plate to a vehicle (or IIRC, the retention certificate can be that form). You apply to transfer the reg to your vehicle and send the new reg certificate along with your V5 and mOT certificate to your local VRO (not DVLA Swansea); with the £80 fee.

The local DVLA VRO will then advise you that the transfer has taken place and issue you with a new tax disc and MOT for your car bearing the new reg number - within about 5 days. You then purchase new plates and put them on your car; advise your insurance co and return the old tax disc to the DVLA in the envelope they provide.

Job done - then within a couple of weeks DVLA Swansea send you a new V5.

It's pretty easy really; I have personalized plates on my 3 cars and each time I change cars, I have to go through the transfer process as I don't want to lose my reg numbers......

That's far more complicated than my experiences. I haven't informed the insurance company until the plates been transferred. Just ring them up once done and they send out the updated certificate of insurance.

You can either post the application to the DVLA or visit their local office. I went to the local office as i don't trust our postal service and it's done there and then. Simply take the certificate of retention, your v5, and mot (if applic). They send your v5 away for updating and issue you with a new tax disc and mot certificate straight away - no mention of insurance. The vehicle has to be insured anyway (to be currently taxed etc), the onus is on you to inform your ins company of the change.

Thanks for the info. It is a new plate and the company want a £80 transfer fee or somthing and my details, so would that be what you have mention above?

If not then that would be £160 in fees:confused1:

I will have to ring them up tomorrow and see whats what.

Thanks for your help everyone :smartass:

No, you only pay the £80 once per transaction mate! Based on that I'm guessing the reg number dealers will handle the paperwork on your behalf - which should make it even easier for you!!

I'd guess yes Dave (former sentence; not the last one mate!!)

The receiving vehicle will need taxing so you'd need to complete the application for a tax disc at the time of assigning the registration.

Once you are advised the transfer has gone through you then inform your insurers. It's important that your insurance states the plate that is on the car at the time - so they only need to know once you have put the new reg on it.

Once the transfer is complete, then DVLA will send you the new V5 in a couple of weeks.
