Arr ok? Is that the norm of all dig slr`s? As you guessed its my first and was expecting to see the picture on the screen before i took it, so i have to use the view finder? This is a really dumb ass question for me to be asking isnt it?:crying:

Hi,

Look in the menu, if its anything like the Nikons then theres an option to turn that function on or off. But no you cant have the image up on screen before you take the pic.

Cheers Baz, Ive just edited my first part of the question, I meant lcd screen not view finder, So my bad, I will start again!!

When i take a picture, do i have to look through the viewfinder to look at the pic i am about to take

Actually youve answered my question.

Do you think that is silly or do i need to get used to taking pictures through the view finder, like a pro :sneaky2:

stop being a nancy and look through the viewfinder. welcome to the world of real cameras ;)

no more pressing of buttons to zoom in and out. twisty lens all the way ;)

ewwwwwwwwwwwww, I though the zoom was a motor too, oh well back to the 80`s, at least it will match the era of my car

No Ian , I think you are right mate, we are in a different league when we take pictures now, the human league :clown:

cheers lads, I`m just off into the bedroom with my manual zoom :gunsmilie:

you'll probably have an auto or manual selector switch on the lens so it will auto focus or manual, but you'll have to zoom in yourself

Which model do you have, I have a 50D and it has LIVEVIEW so you can view the image on the LCD, and also zoom in, its great for macro and close up using manual focus lenses, but just get used to using the viewfinder its much better and also you can hold it steadier by tucking your arms in close to your chest.

AS someone said, there is a menu option to use the LCD screen for shooting but Canon advise against it because of power consumption

Chase through the menus and you'll find it

If you're still having problems I'll have a look in my instructions (Got an EOS 40D) when I get back tonight. I do find that the picture taken is greater than the view in the viewfinder. Good camera though and cracking lenses

i don't have a canon but i have a Nikon D90 and i must say to be honest you don't really want to use the screen than for lazy photos otherwise you may aswell buy a normal flash lcd camera.

The viewfinder does help make steadier pictures and only really use screen for seeing what my pictures came out like. All the settings you select will show at the bottom of the screen in the viewfinder anyway.

i always use manual zoom however my wife likes to flick it into motor zoom as she is just a casual and regular user.

i do agree it would be a nifty feature... havnt found out yet (as you are also aware these things have millions of options) but my wife would definatly use the screen for taking pictures as she is less worried about perfections

But good luck with your camera and i hope you enjoy it, we enjoy taking walks and taking random scenic pictures now and have just ordered my macro lens :p

lets us know if you find the settings :)

Im going to get a sony alpha for my birthday. It has live view on it. My bro's camera is very similar and its great. As you can adjust the screen so you can hold it above your head and still see what your taking a pic of.

I'm afraid most SLRs still do not have what they call "live view". It's starting to come in, but is still only available on the higher end models.

Give it a year or so and it will be as common as on compacts.

What model is it? i think the 450 and above have live view

Daz.

What lenses have you got with it, the canon 50mm f1.8 is a nice little lens for £70 new, has a really wide aperture so is good for taking shots in low light and getting a shallow depth of field.

Heres one from a go kart track, its nice for making the subject pop out from the background.

Nice shot! I`m still learning with numbers and specs yet, but the lens is a sigma 18-50mm 1:3.5-5.6 dc if that makes sence?

could do with some tips really, what lens do i need to take close up images of faces, flowers, insects? and I will also be using it for taking snaps of cars at meets ect!

Cheers mate

Well the 3.5-5.6 means that at the wider angle of 18mm you can have an aperture of f3.5 then getting smaller at the 50mm end at f5.6, a wider aperture (smaller number) will give a shallow depth of field ie less of the shot will be in focus away from the actual focus point, so if you want to take landscapes for example you want more in focus so you would use a higher f number such as f8-f11.

The lower the f number will let in more light so you can use a lower iso number, and higher shutter speed to freeze the action, which is better for less grainy images, iso above 800 will introduce noise, nothing that some noise reduction cant handle though.

Keep an eye on shutter speed also it should be at least the same as the focal length or faster.

That`s like chinese to me?? I think i need to do some reading!! :chinese:

I`ve always just been used to a point and shoot camera, so i need to get my act together and get the book out, cheers bud, I`m sure it will make sence in a few weeks

Yeah it was to me too til i read up on it, have a look on this site, there are 10 lesson that explain all the numbers and techniques for improving.

Best to use either aperture priority or shutter priority, that gives you control over the depth of field, and shutter priority will allow you to set the shutter speed for fast action or long exposures for light trails :)

Cheers Beermonster - that is a useful link for all of us who like to take a few shots. :2guns: and need to learn a bit more. Nice one bud
