looking at a w960i sony, will these connect to a wireless router instead of using their own internet thingy so I don't get charged ?

Yes it will connect to your wireless router but the software internet programme this phone uses is very poor.

will it do the job of internet ok(ish)? or is it proper sh!te? it's quite cheap and my c902 is a bit beat up now

I've been through several snmart phones and i'm n ow saving for an apple iphone. do yourself a favour and wait off until you can get one. i should have just got one from the start.

Yeah the sony will be ok, problem i had was if i logged into a website forum etc everytime i clicked on another thread or link it would log me out. Nightmare.

Just to add:

 

HTC HD2 on virgin mobile is £30 a month which includes free handset, 800 any network mins, unlimited texts, unlimited data, and if you have any virgin services, tv, phone etc, then they give you 2 free months and free virgin to virgin calls including landlines.

iPhone all the way! I'm paying 75 a month... 3000 minunte don't know how many texts and unlimited Internet. Works perfect! Fast as well!

Yeah I like the iphone's just after something cheapsh!te to put on PAYG that plays music and could do net stuff on the patio so I don't have to pay for net surfing(via wireless router at home). It's gonna get a hammering due to the nature of my work (full of dust and crap) so don't want to spend a lot on one

I agree with this. two of my best all round smart phones

 

Iphone 3GS

HTC Touch HD 1 or 2, blinding bits of kit and i love these two phones just as much as a iphone. these phones do not get the credit they deserve. and if someone said i could have a Iphone or a HTC touch HD for free, but only one, id be hard pressed to know what one to have.

HTC touch HD 1 off ebay, should be able to pick one up quite cheapish now.

I have an iphone & they just work so well! Am well impressed with it & internet access is great! Not sure about all networks but with O2 internet is free even when out & about and not through your router! :cool3:

 

About the only other phone I would consider when it comes out soon is the Google Nexus One:

The Google nexus 1 is the best smart phone around. You can buy one direct from Google in the US. Iphones suck IMO the signal strength on them is awful, you knock the things on to silent the whole time. The battery life is bad and generally as a phone they are not great.

LOL! thats a little harsh IMO! Some people seem to hate the iphone but I think its a great gadget!

 

The signal strength is faultless in my area, I have never knocked it on to silent & battery life is no worse than any other large screen phone! As a phone it makes & receives calls just fine!!

Agree with this.

 

Its not the iphone i hate, its apple who make it. they tie you to the istore. cant set a ring tone with a song purchased else where, and hold tech back on it, like flash player and other software they keep from the istore. You have to plug the thing into Itunes and also need a itunes account.

 

I hate that. thats why i jailbroke mine as soon as i got it.

 

The reception in my area was great, the battery latest ages if you didn't play around on it much, was also rather good when playing around on it. it was just the odd app that used too much battery life. like tomtom

 

The touch function on the phone is one of the most responsive dive used as well.

 

Then you have the HTC touch HD.

 

You can do pretty much anything with this phone, customize how it looks onscreen, the web function is very good with flash support, windows based as well so you get a lot of 3rd party development for it. the touch function is awesome as well, yet lacks the iphones multi touch. windows media player on it is great. and its fast.

As a mobile billing company we get all the phones early, I had an IPhone 2-3 months before it was available in the UK. I do own one (although just used as Ipod!!) so please dont think im an Apple hater but honestly there is far better out there.

 

A lot of people get an I phone thinking it will be ace and find out its just an Ipod with a sub standard phone put on it. The nexus one has a mouse for starters and lets be honest for surfing and games thats very useful. Being a Google android phone the surfing is excellent, fantastic range of free apps. And it runs flash and is the most poweful phone around.

 

I know its a choice thing, but those batteries on the iphones are naff and you cant even change the things!!. The nerds in the office say they like the Iphone because they dont make or recieve voice calls. The people in the office who need a decent voice phone with signal and long lasting batteries dont touch them and go Android. If ever im out and my phone is on the table people always ask to have a look at it as well as it looks so cool.

As said myself, I think the Nexus One looks a great phone & would be the only other phone I would consider.

 

There is a very good reason all these phones get compared to & pitched as the next iphone beater! LOL! Quite a compliment to Apple I would say!

 

I am just saying I have never had an issue with the phone side of things?! Works great in fact. & the "mouse" is the only reason I dont like the look of the Nexus - they are always crap & break on phones!! :thumbdown: I much prefer browsing just using touchscreen & I think I have read the Nexus doesnt support true multi touch in all apps?! I still think it looks a great phone with loads of potential! :thumbup:

my iphone worked flawlessly as a phone, so cant understand where your having problems with it?? although mine was the 3gs, and only ever had reception problems when in an area with not many antennas around.

 

as for using a mouse on a phone, sorry but i still think id be able to surf the web a lot faster using an iphones touch screen and post in this thread using the iphone, just like ive been doing for the last 4 weeks, alot faster than using a mouse, i can also click on very small links with the iphone as it always seems to know where im putting my chubby fingers.

 

only issue i have had with the iphone is its predictive text when inputting things into a thread. mainly due to it thinking that im trying to type something else.

 

and games on iphone are a doddle, just ask anyone with an iphone and GTA china town wars, may as well be playing a PSP tbh its that good. add onto that blackra1n to jailbreak it, and its pretty much open source.
