Good Afternoon Folks

I have a 1995 300ZX Fairlady TT Automatic with 60K on the clock. Over the last number of months the car has developed the following problem. On occassions when I switch the ignition on the engine makes no attempt to turn over. Generally if you switch the ignition off and try again in a few minutes the car will start. However yesterday it would not start at all. I removed the battery and replaced it with another one from my brothers car. Still no joy. All the electrics are working but no attempt is being made to turn the engine over (no sound for starter motor).

Any help greatly appreciated.

bad connection on the starter motor maybe? do the dash lights/head lights dim when you try to turn it over?

Hi Tudor

Thanks for replying. Have checked connections to starter motor. Dash/headlights do not dim when trying to turn over engine.

Welcome to the club.

Your user name is going to get confusing, we already have a Carmad on the forum lol

Well being a 1995, it rules out the PTU fault as im sure they are shipped with series two's, i would say its a bad connection on the Starter motor mate.

Haha, i thought that as well, was like what the?!! Car mad is now registered this year. Then i relied he doesn't have the dot there :)

can you see if the stater is getting a 12v supply when you turn the key , you will do this handy enough on the ramp anbd get some one inside , just use a voltmeter it will tell you if its getting any voltage

mine does a similar thing, 1994, not sure at the time of writing if its the starter motor 'stuck in a bad place' if thats possible, of if its when the battery is not up to full charge. :cool3:

when i turn the key nothing happens perhaps for a second and then it will fire, sometimes i just sit there with the key turned and nothing for ages and also i can flick it on and off rapidly and it may go it may not. i also have no sound only the initial click, i sit in silence. :walkman:

most times though it starts as it should and as not ever let me down.

it is not causing me a problem as long as it does not get worse. :bored:

i had a capri 20 plus years ago and it was fine when i left it on a hill, fired lovely with the key, getting ready to bump it you see, but when i took a chance and left it on the flat it would not fire!!!!! sods law!!!

dirty contact in the ignition switch maybe? Have you tried wiggling the key when you turn it over?

Once again many thanks for all your help. The car has an alarm which I have disabled. Battery is fully charged. Have squirted some WD40 down the ignition switch. Appreciate offer of starter from YTS Weazel. Will check out starter inhibitor.

Starter motor problem update. Unfortunely I have made slow progress on sorting out problem. The car failed to start when I was down visiting my brother so I have a 5 hour round trip each time I work on it which certainly does not help matters.

I have removed the starter motor + solenoid and have had them tested by an auto electrician. They tested perfect. So to recap.

1. Battery used to start car has being fully charged and tested in another car and works fine.

2. Fuel pump can be heard pumping when iginition is turned on.

On reading other posts mention was made of a starter relay located behind the front wheel arch passenger side. However this was for the manual 300ZX . This anybody know where on the automatic ZX this relay is located.

Any other suggestions really appreciated as at this stage desperation is setting in !!

The starter relay is behind the wheel arch splash guards on the DRIVERS side towards the rear if the arch high up, is a large blue relay, if you identify the switch contacts you can link them out as a test.

If you turn the wheel on full right lock, you can get a couple of fixings out and pull the arch liner down enough to reveal the relay.

Hope that helps

Got my brother to refit the starter motor. He finally managed to get the car started by shorting across the starter motor terminals.

So somewhere between the ignition switch and the starter motor some electrical component is broken. He has located where the starter motor relay is. Can anybody tell me what combination of pins on the relay to jump to bypass it inorder to check if thats where the fault lies.

Thanks.

Located a wiring diagram for the 300ZX and linked out the switch contacts on the starter relay. Car started first time. Have tried sourcing a new relay on EBay with no luck. Does anybody know where I can get one. Thanks.

Have finally got my hands on a replacement starter relay. Car now starts on the button first time. Thanks to all those who helped.

glad to hear that mate, at least it was something and nothing, finding the problem on these cars is most of the battle!
