Off to South Africa on Monday. Does anyone know if an International Drivers' Permit is required for South Africa? I know in the days before photo card licences, you needed an international drivers' licence as I used to have to get them for the USA.

 

But since getting my photocard licence, I've never had to. Now my God father, who's a QC phoned me up earlier to say he needed one when he went to South Africa a few years ago, so I'd assumed he'd be correct since he's a man of law. Bit I can't find anything that tells me whether I have a photo card licence that I'll need one? AFAIK, I don't, just want to make sure as this is my first trip to SA.

Regardless of what the DVLA says I would still go to the post office and get an International Drivers' Permit - costs peanuts and is done on the spot. Many countries will "officially" accept a UK licence but from experience a lot of the police out on the road do not unless the licence is accompanied by an international permit. If I were you I'd just get one. They're valid for 12 months so you could use it during your other travels as well - IMO money well spent.

No permit is required in South africa, im positive about this as i usually go there every year to johannesburg and i lived there for around 4 years in the 90's
