tech help windows Vista

I had an old advent laptop that went screwy so reinstalled vista then the laptop would randomly just turn off half way through installation well its been sitting on a shelf for months so thought id have one more go before i throw it away, well its exepted windows now. BUT its getting to the login screen and shows an account called "other" and its asking for a username and password anyone ever come across this as ive tried all my usual login details and any windows admin defaults i know. any ideas, or do i have to try and hack vista lol.
