I think this bit says it all "We do not think this should be a blanket ban, but where there is medical evidence that a motorist could pose a risk to themselves and others, then this could be sensible compromise," said Neil Greig, the IAM's director of policy" but shouldnt that say if they pose a risk then they should lose there licence.

hmm its a tricky one - its a bit harsh to ban them as such, perhaps they should just be advised against it (or as this government would love to suggest, tax them more for using it like when they go through a toll or something!), or perhaps allowed to use the slow lane only. it would be impossible to review every single OAP to see if they're suitable, and TBH I cant remember the last time that a major accident was caused solely by an OAP.

My old man is 74 and he drives perfectly OK on the motorway. He maintains good speed with excellent lane discipline etc.

I think if there is proof that the person is having difficulties then yes, prevent them from harming themselves and others. A blanket ban is nonsense, we will all be that age one day. How would you feel if you were perfectly capable of driving on motorways and were banned because of your age?.
