My Canon IXUS500 has run its course now and tbh its served me well. The battery is no longer holding charge and also the pic quality isn't as good as most now and to top it off the screen is very small.

So i'm in the market for a new one. Nothing fancy like SLR's lol, just a standard camera that takes good quality pics and with a good shutter speed - one that takes the bloody pic when i push the button!!! That is a MUST!

Am only looking to spend around £100-150 mark as i don't use it alot really.

Have had a quick gander in Comet and Currys but nothing really jumps out at me. So what are peoples recommendations? And also where from.

Cheers,

Isaac

Well i saw the first one and was considering it seen as there is a big saving to be had!

The second one seems excellent but yeah why so much off? That's half price! If they have that one in the store i think i'll have a good look at it!

i would go for the second one but if i was after a compact (im an SLR guy) i would go lumix or lieca but they cost

From experience, and having tried and owned many, stick to Canon. IMO, they are simply the best overall.

Also, buy from the net; some models are still 50% of highstreet prices. Sites like pixmania and amazon are the best. However, I would not recommend buying from high street chains online as they still tend to be the most expensive.

As for service, amazon is outstanding.

Good advice!

I was hoping to nip into the shops and try some out and then buy online. I need to make sure the shutter speed is up to scratch and what not. I can't stand cameras that take forever to actually take the bloody picture!

zx-eyes, dont fall for the high mega pixel stuff. unless your planning on blowing up the image to poster size proportions.

a 5 to 8 mega pixel camera is fine for normal everyday pictures. if your planning on making posters. then go for a high mega pixel camera.

best camera is the one with the correct lighting settings on it. a good auto focus. and mainly one that fits your needs.

So with this in mind, what do you plan to do with the camera? normal family / car use? or astrophotography / paparazzi / poster maker / natural world correspondent?

then it would be easier to point you in the right direction

Dead simple stuff mate, pics of my car, car parts, meets, nights out etc etc...... Just general stuff nothing exciting or official.

Cheers,

Isaac :D

Panasonic fs25 is a pretty good package for the money. Have been eyeing this one up myself has some good features and lots of scene types and a IA mode for fully automatic point and shoot.

Hello mate.

Ive got this camera;

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/522490/KODAK-V1273BLK

I paid £99.99 for it on sale a while back at half price as it was supposed to be £199.99.

Really cant fault it its a great camera to be honest and its a 12megapixel. I dont think you will get a better camera for that price so i would recommend that one alot, the picture quality is fantastic.

Hold the button half way in let them camera put its green box around the picture and snap away and you will get some great shots.

Any more questions about it just ask mate.

cheers

I am a professional photographer by trade so please pay absolutely no attention to what i say!!!

Whilst I agree that in this sector Panasonic Lumix and Canon make very good cameras I think the really good ones will all fall outside your intended price range - (anything worth having would be £250 +)

I have always shot Nikon and their new compacts range are all really good though still may be above what you were willing/needing to pay.

If you really do just want it for snapshots then there are some great deals out there on Samsung at the moment. Their NV range is coming to the end of it's life so you can get some craking deals on the NV 9 -

I think the half price deal was with Argos but I could be wrong.

The delay you are talking about between pressing the button and taking the picture is called shutter lag and is a by-product of a small camera trying o do too much with a small processor. Bigger the processor - better the lens - better the sensor - the less shutter lag you get.

If you need any more help feel free to drop me a line with a link to what you are looking at.

this is the reason i left compacts and went SLR i was tired of pushing the button to take a pic and by the time it took it the thing i was shooting have moved. i have two photo albums from disney florida one with a £300+ sony compact from 2004 lots of blured shots not very good and dark. then last year went again to get married took my nikon SLR never missed a shot all great even moving pics and dark shots came out great. i will never go to a comact again

Well I have an DSLR too but need something small to take out on nights out or just when the SLR is impractical.

I think unless you've been spoiled by the quality of a decent DSLR most point and shoots by decent names will surfice for most people. But as Dipone says go to a shop and have a play with it you don't want to order the bargain of the century of the net only to find its horrible to use and hold.

Isaac!! Dont get a camera with shutter lag mate, you have enough problems with turbo lag!!:rofl:
