I know you are allowed to drive your car to the MOT station and back with no MOT, but where do you stand with having no road tax.

 

I assume basically shouldnt be on the road.....but ovioulsy cause i dont have an MOT i cant get road tax.lol! So wondering what the law is on this.

Craig, i spoke with a work colleague of mine, about this recently.

He said that you can drive to an MOT centre for the test but you arent allowed to drive it back without an MOT. Basically saying, if you drive it to the test centre without an mot, you legally can't drive it home without having passed it's test.

 

Im not sure about the road tax but im sure someone will be along soon with an answer.

But the road tax thing is the main concern i need to know about.

im pretty sure that if you have no road tax then the car must be declared SORN and kept on a driveway, garage etc not on any public road

I think its OK if you can borrow trade plates from somewhere, I did this when I worked for a recovery company and the tax ran out on my car, they just gave me the trade registration plates to put on dash and parcel shelf.

 

The main issue of driving yours away from the garage is your insurance, if the car is on public road without tax then your insurance may be invalidated.

DVLA state that you can drive to the MOT and from the MOT but must use the quickest and shortest route possible TO the MOT station, it makes no mention of whether you pass or not, it also makes no mention of distance to the MOT station and back, it just needs to be the quickest and shorted journey, You also need to be able to prove that the MOT is booked for the day of travel.

 

This is up to interpretation i know, but theoretically you can drive from john o'groats to lands end, as long as you can prove you have a MOT booked for that day.

 

Oh you need to be insured on the vehicle in question as well.

 

But as your MOT cert is only valid for the day you obtain it, in practise everyone drives for 364 days of the year with out one anyway lol

As far as TAX is concerned, if you had previously declared SORN, then decided to put it back on the road, your MOT would probably be out of date (maybe, but for this we'll say it is!!) so the only way to obtain a TAX disc is to have a valid MOT, so it goes in this order....

 

• Obtain Insurance, so you can drive to MOT station.
  

• Obtain MOT, so you can buy TAX.
  

• Buy Tax disc!
  

 

So, you see you CAN drive to an MOT station WITHOUT a TAX Disc!

 

This also applies to Kit Car builders etc as well....... See, it's logical if you think about it!

Only if you already have both the Insurance and MOT, as they check them electronically when you apply for the TAX on-line

Do you know if this is 100% true dave, so if i was to get pulled over by the police i could say, well it has no road tax due to no MOT and im on my way now to get the MOT then straight for road tax.

I just dont want to get stopped/****ed over and have the car removed and crushed.

 

P.S. My MOT ran out 24th august and road tax finished end of august so was declared sorn so i need MOT to be able to get road tax.

One thing you must do Craig is pre book the MOT, If you are stopped on the way to the garage chances are that the cops will phone to make sure it is booked in!

 

You are exempt road tax to and from the MOT station, but you must have insurance.

BUT they wont insure anything from Group 18 and above! So you can't insure a Zed ;)

Your car HAS to be insured on the road. But you can get away with no tax and mot driving to the mot station.
