ive nearly got the car sorted now..

just one problem left.

the car smells of unburnt fuel when on boost. i have virtually no boost leaks (i think the cam covers are leaking when pressurised as i have an oil leak there too)

i replaced the recirc valves

timing etc was spot on

the only thing not really checked is the afm but i had a conzult last week which showed nothing unordaiary- is that correct jeff?

no cats fitted btw

i am going to remove the plenum some time soon to do the cam covers so ill replace the fuel rail hose. have i missed somthing or does the std map just run very rich when coming on boost

Have you tightened up the clips on fuel hoses? If you search for fuel smell hundreds of posts will come up... very common.

one of the first things i did when i got the zed as they were all leaking.

i dont get a smell on idle though. even the exhaust smells only slightly of fuel as you would expect without cats.

i dont think it can be the fan blowing the smell. im quite sure its the smell of un burnt fuel (running rich) not a leak.

thanks for the response though.

Well there are a couple that are tricky to get to - you'll see when you remove the plenum. There's also one under FPR which often leaks... Are you're exhausts black?

they are very black inside.

also the outer shroud of the plugs are. the tips are the correct colour but look like its been running rich recently. the plugs are brand new btw.

The smell of unburnt fuel inside the car whilst driving is quite often caused by fumes coming back into the car from the rear. There are several routes for air/fumes to enter the boot area so it may be prudent to check there first. Unburnt fuel coming out the exhaust does indicate there is a problem further up the line so I'd speak to Jeff about this if I were you. You may also want to check the fuel pressure regulator and damper and replace them if they are still the originals. Furthermore, the temp sensor may be feeding incorrect information to the ECU thereby causing it to run rich. I think Jeff will know a number of other potential causes to examin.

Good luck!

thanks for the info

i had been beginning to wonder if it were the regulator or damper. im sure it is the emissions i can smell.

i dont think its the temp sensor as i had it on conzult last week and jeff did not comment on it.

to be fair i only smell it with the window open as im slowing down.

i assume the only way to deturmine a faulty regulator is to get a gauge on it?
