am i doing something wrong, its always been like this no matter what tv or dvd i use

when i watch a dvd (i now use my ps3) i have to have the sound right up to hear what they are saying, but when a car goes past in the background or a gun goes off or some action with music is going on it is so loud that i have to turn it down, then when they are speaking i have to turn it back up to hear them, is there anything i can do to change this or do i have to put up with it

i had this when i didnt have my surround sound set up properly cant remember what i done to fix it but im sure some tech buff will be along shortly to help, im sure i just changed a setting or something

i think the problem is the dvd is playing 5.1 sound through stereo speakers....i used to have this problem when i was just using tv speakers.....your dvd player setup may have some sound settings,,i know my sony had a setting for nighttime use when all the voices and background sound were set the same.....its awful at night when youve got tv really loud to hear the speech, and then there's a barrage of gunfire!!!!

playstation i reckon....can you change the playstation sound settings to just stereo?....

on the ps3 from the main settings menu, go to the "audio output settings" press right a few times select manual, then choose a 2 channel option, mine has pcm 44khz and pcm 48 selected.

on seconds thoughts if your not connected via hdmi you probably wont have these options, there is a dynamic range control in the BD/DVD video settings try setting that to ON

Has the ps3 got a 'normalise' option I think every manufacturer calls it something different? but this makes the sound range a lot narrower. Press the Triangle button with a dvd playing and see whats there, I can't say Ive noticed myself but I ain't been looking.
