I've just been on TT.net to drag out some info on Mines ECU's. Some of the Aussie guys have mentioned that you need decent fuel for these ECU's otherwise you run the risk of detonation, and we all know where that can lead...BOOM!

Have any of you guys run these ECU's over here in Blightey? If so how have you got on with them and what fuel do you use? Unleaded or Super???

in short - them blowing the shit outta your engine.

Yes they are tuned for 100+ Octane fuel from japan. They are also very aggresively tuned so running shit water 95Oct that we get all over the place here will cause rods to venture where they shouldn't.

I believe that you can get them retuned for UK fuel and your mods. not cheap tho, Ask 300Z i think he has been down that road.

Tim, it took me over a year to find out the truth about Mines ECU's. (with help from Warren)

Options Motorsport in Silverstone are the only UK suppliers. Mines ECU's are bloody expensive but effective. They are safe to use with super unleaded unless they have been programmed otherwise. They cannot be reprogrammed by anyone as the data on the eprom is 'confidential'! Options have to send them back to Japan to have them modified.

If you have one use SUPER UL ONLY! Speak to Options if you are concerned. They can send it back to Japan and have it remapped for normal unleaded if you want. I don't know what octane fuel is available in Oz.

If you have an import that came with a Mines ECU then be grateful that you have one of the best money can buy. Enjoy it.

...so what are the safest and probably best suited for UK spec cars then? JWT?

i have mines and yup lol, it cost me dearly, but they are probably the best ecu tuning company in the world (or have the best reputation)

like anders said, phone option motorsport, they also know the story well.

i believe to have one tuned if you alredy own one, the company will redo it free of charge.

there are many other alternatives, jwt is a common one, and craig is busy investigating a piggy back system from ,(i forget the name)

Ahh the Good Old ECU debate....

I would say there are few if any that could be safer than JWT's chip - altho they are tuned for a specific but sensible and effective upgrade path. They are cheap and easy to use.

They do run very rich at WOT so reduce the chance of detonation but also dont reah peak HP where a more expensive chip may lean off to produce more hp. If you decide to get more adventurous you can always lean off yourself with a AFC or the like.

Craig is investigating the UNICHIP route i believe. They are custom tunned for your car so make the most of your exact upgrades - there are of course a lot of if's and buts with this scheme as well.

There are many other Choices SE, JUN Etc but i believe non will be better than a properly tuned Mines one. A JWT will be safer tho specially for UK Fuel.

Cheers

Cheers Nico, I need to get my head 'round all this stuff before I get my car back. I've decided that I'm spending some money to have it put right so if I am going to start down the upgrade path I need to get a very good idea from you guys what's good and what's shite!

Learning more and more as time goes by, especially on TT.net...excellent source of technical advice and info.

Do any of the upgrades use a standard EPROM and components?

I have an EPROM blower/copier...

you can copy mine lol (mines joke) they are sealed so only mines can open them

Brief 'high horse' moment coming on ...

Most, if not all, ECUs will be based on programmable EPROMs - they are cost effective for the developers.

However, as far as I'm aware there isn't anyone on this forum with the equipment / experience / expertise to program ECUs. We are therefore reliant on others to do so. If their chips are copied then someone gets a cheap upgrade. However, the reduced sales will have an impact on future developments.

I could go on more (and perhaps those who are in the software game may choose to) but I would not be prepared to consider a copied chip.

I don't think were talking software fraud here. It looks like reprograming the eprom is a free service anyway. A mines program would NEVER work in another ECU or visa versa. I get the impression that the revenue stream comes from the sale of the ECUs and reprogramming is part of the support package.

But you are right, best to stay away from dodgy after market practices. I just don't think this is.

After thought, look at water injection as a solution to preignition and a way of living with crap fuel.
