Noticed that my tailpipes are pretty black and sooty inside, might my engine be running rich?

I'm told that as far as the inside of the pipes are concerned, light grey = running lean, medium/dark grey = normal, and black = rich... does this hold true with the Z? If so, is there much that a novice can do about it, or is it into the garage for me?

Thanks guys,

Raz

I don't think you have to worry about it just as long as it

doesn't blow black smoke during cruising or idle.

Blowing black smoke at WOT is normal.

The engine runs rich to prevent detonation then.

You could do the O2 sensor check to be sure they're OK.

What is WOT?????

JAN..

WOT = Wide Open Throttle.

Running rich could be down to a faulty temperature sensor! A consult diagnosics would reveal any mixture problems.

Maciej is right in that running rich is better than running lean as will prevent risk of detonation and engine damage.

As far as inside colour of the tail pipes..... you can't apply that theory as it depends what type of driving you do.

I think I have compression and detonation problems.

I collect diamonds and coal from my Super Drager.

Is this normal? ;-)
