i have a couple and the pain is intense

This is going to sound like I'm trying to be all big and macho etc etc but, "intense"? Everyones pain threshold is different so it's a subjective point but, from my honest point of view, with machismo firmly set to the "off" position, I disagree mate. After speaking to friends (some of whom are heavily tattooed and one of whom is a tattooist...ah, the music "biz"...lol ;)), from talking about it with my wife (who annoyingly, currently has one more tattoo than me...something that I thihnk needs putting right shortly! :D) and from my own experience under the needle, the pain is definately there, no doubt about it, but it really isn't as bad as some people make out...it's more an annoying pain than anything else.

For men, the problem areas are supposed to be the abdomen, spine and ribs (one of mine runs over my spine and I'm a skinny fecker so there ain't much skin over the bone, lol :D) and for women, the spine and ankle (one of my other half's is on her ankle) and yep, the pain does increase when doing those. There's also the artist themselves: a heavy-handed artist can themselves cause more pain than is necessary. But aside from that...well, as I said before, it's more annoying than anything! :)

As far as the original post goes...if you're going for a Tribal design, I'd try and make it a bit more individual if possible. There's a heck of a lot of tribals out there and, tbh, they can look absolute g@sh if you're not careful! You can easily end up looking like every other Tom, Dick and Harry. For example, John (Dixon) on here has a good tribal over his shoulder/arm, done by an ex forum member...really different from the norm.
