about the dog, ive been training him sice we got him, he has been as good as gold and a very nice dog, but lately he has been very testing, even went for me once or twice, ive recently found out that when im out michelle lets him onto the setee, she sits on the floor and lets him "play" she cuddles him all the time and lets him jump up and basically get away with murder

then when i come in if i tell him off he runs to michelle for comfort, ive told her to stop moddycodling him when i tell him off but she wont, he went for me agan tonite and he got a scudding (good teling off) and went running to michelle again

ive told her if he does it again he is goin the journey, she wont have it that basically she is the bitch and because he runs to her and gets comfort that im no longer the pack leader

if she doesnt start discipling him as i do, he will unfortunately have to go to home that knows how to understand dogs

its killing me to realise this, but at 1 year old and 10 stone he is only gonna get stronger and more dominant to a point when i can longer fight him off, it aint riddicks fault, but she is gonna make him into a dog he doesnt have to be

she takes no notice of me, she thinks im being rough, ive even got a riding crop to scare him with and he dragged it out of my hand

what to do, im at wits end with him and her

i feel sorry more for the dog

i love riddick but i cant get through to michelle, she thinks cause she has read one book that she knows best, its her fault not riddicks

p.s, ive had dogs all my life and know how to train them within houshold limits, she treats it as her "baby"

Mollycoddling.

Same problem with my gf's doberman. He always runs to her if I have a go at him and she is soft as cake with him!

  • Author

yup, i get onto him, he lies down and as soon as i turn my back he running to her

its not the dog its her, i think he spending the night out in the back garden where i put him about an hour ago

Trouble is Alan a dog like that even at his age and size could tear you to bits, theres no half way with a dog like that, it either does what you tell it always without fail or its dangerous. Tough love I know but right. Like I said when you first got it I saw a big fooker fully grown american bulldog and its one hell of a sight, let alone if it wants a piece of you.

Hope it goes your way mate and your missus sees the light. Its similar with ours but at least its not the same size as Riddick.

he knows his place when the wench aint about and he is a lovely dog, but michelle has him like a fookin lapdog, i didnt get him to sit on her lap and be nice, i got him to be a great dog that does what i say, is submisive, likes walks, love attention (when he is offered it) and is a lovely companion, which he was till the wench started to moddycoddle him

she needs to know how to treat a dog like riddick, as said it aint his fault its hers, im gonna show her this thread in a couple of days when im leading him out to a shelter

p.s, i wont give him to a shelter, i will give him to my dad

mate just be careful, even though all dogs go through stages of testing going for you doesnt look like a good sign, he may have smelt your fear so next time be prepared if you know what i mean, what method do you use to tell him off?

the last thing a dog will smell on me is fear, i am afraid of no dog and never have been, was attacked by a staffie a few years ago, the owner who let it off the lead in a school playground tried to do me for animal cruelty, i had to poke one of its eyes through as it went mental and went for my friends child

you should never be afraid of any type of animal within reason

i know youd never be afraid especially your own dog but you were stunned if you know what i mean?

end of the day if your the pack leader he should no way do that, calls for some punishment id say, do you put him in a room or anything when hes naughty?

  • Author

yup, in the kitchen but the wench goes in when im not taking any notice and pets him up

its her not him, i want lots of replies showig her errors so i can show her its not just me being a twat lol

got t get some ground rules matey its best for riddick believe me you dont want him getting older and carrying on these habbits nail it now a well trained and disiplined dog is a happy dog as its owner will be once the boundries are set but you must stick to them, im lucky there is only me in the house with my dog an alaskan malamute when she was naughty i used to pin her down by her scruff untill she welpt then i said NO! after a few times all i had to do was raise my hand and say no and she knew she was in the dog house, you have to be cruel to be kind, breaks my heart to lay a finger on her but i didnt want her to grow to the size she is today with out knowing her boundries and her place in the pack, have a word with the missus matey tell her riddick has to be disiplined he will be a much better dog afterwards as you know matey

you will have to seperate them, put the missus up the shed and the dog in the house. Hang on i think i got this the wrong way round

cheers people. took the dog in the dining room with me last nite and chsed the bitch, was good as gold, gonna have a good talking to ourlass today and tell her she either shapes uo or i get shot of the dog, breaks my heart to say that but its the only option, been on the phone to my mate who will take him for sa few days, might shock her into doing right

great idea mate, dogs aint stupid they know when they can use people to get what they want. are you supplying the 12 bags of dog food for them two days lol he's getting a big lad now lol

Yep as said he needs discipline mate, and sounds like he is testing the water and seeing how far he can push it and then running to the one he knows will not shout for protection when things are not to his liking

it's a trait but one that can be overcome he is only doing what is natural , ie getting away with things , hence pushing the boundaries , to see if he can make it to top dog !!

many options before getting rid though i.e:, new training methods, dog training school , or even the chop :x: but most importantly you need Michelle in agreement and on board ;)

good luck mate and keep us posted

Chris :)

We have got a similar problem with our Boxers, although they have never gone for either of us.

I give them the discipline and they are as good as gold most of the time, but when I am out, my other half will let them onto the sofa's and upstairs which she knows really hacks me off.

I walk in the door after a late shift and as soon as they hear the door opening I hear them run downstairs. Get to the bedroom and the bedsheets are covered in dog hair, which I can't stand, but she just thinks they are her babies and they can do no wrong.

I will get them to sit as someone comes in the house where as she thinks they are just being friendly when they are jumping up at people.

It must be really hard for the dogs having double standards and they are always going to favour the easier option when they can do what they like.

Have the ****ing thing put down. Just take it to the Vets and tell them you want shot as it is ruining your life.

You cant have something taking over like that in your own house.

You may miss the wench but at least you and Riddick will be happy.

PMSL @ Nick lol, that made me chuckle a lot

acer, i have the exact same prob, doubt it will get as far as getting rid of him, but im trying to shock ourlass into realising what may be in store, he didnt go for as in growling and really attacking, it was a "im boss do as say" snack at me

again the wench is out and he knows im in charge, doing everything i tell him, soon as she comes in he will change

You need her to get a grip Alan!!!! You've not got the sort of dog for what she is doing, eventually he while see her as his bitch and start defending her and his territory as he wants to be alpha male and shes letting him.

My wife doesn't let bacchus get away with anything even though he weighs more than she does and is taller when stood on his back legs lol. We did have a bit off a problem with him trying to dominate her but we've sorted that now;).

To be honest she shouldn't be allowed to have a dog like that as she is going to turn it in too a very dominant dog, which ain't good as you prob well know.

Show her this post too so she can see the errors of her ways:mac1:

My boxers were exactly the same lol except it was my mum and gf that were soft on them, i find with dogs if they misbehave or show any signs of aggression towards you (master) then you should imediatly put them in there place which in some cases smack them realy fooking hard (i know its not nice) but as already mentioned pin them down until they yelp in submission so they know you are and will always be their master, gotta be cruel to be kind.

i agree with this....

another good way is a small water pistol, its not that it hurts them its the shock of squirted, works a treat on my mums boxers :)

mine is just too soft, if a lap dog comes up to her she lies on her belly and submits, gets quite embarrasing when your out LOL but i would rather she be like that than agressive

Mike

as fastredz said, if you need to take control of riddick then get him very firmly by the throat and force him to the floor, this might sound a bit harsh but it does work, and it is how they would be treated in the pack.I have a boxer he is seven now but he still will try to push me when i go in his side of the garden and if i start to chase him to tell him off he shits a brick.lol

I have a dogue de bordeaux and had the same problem.

I was tough on him because i knew he would grow to be 12/13 stone and he was excellent but as he got older he started misbehaving, more than just pushing his luck. It turned out when i left for work at 6am she would let him sit on the settee and share her toast or tea biscuits that she had. Then he would be upstairs while she was getting ready. This is one thing I would never ever stand for, dogs upstairs. When I would come home from work he would try and jump on the settee and look confused when I shouted at him.

It was getting worse and worse to the point where twice he pissed in the kitchen. The second time I tried to tell him off when he proper went for me with teeth bared. I did what anyone would do and lashed out with my fists and knocked him back, then chucked him outside. I told my girlfriend when she got in that I'm getting rid and thats when she confessed she had been letting him get away with everything. I went apeshit and told her if he ever does it again hes gone and so is she. She toughened up and hes been great ever since.

The point is though its alright these women wanting to treat big dogs like babies but they are pack animals and they want to be leader of there pack. If they decide that they have done wrong can they fight them off?

A dog wants to be master or mastered.
