My brother has just given me his old XBOX 360 as it went wrong and he just brought a new one.

Not having as much money as him I want to try and fix it myself so was after some advice.

 

The problem is that you get no picture when you turn it on, but no RROD.

 

Has anybody got any links to a good site or help for me.

 

I have googled it and there are loads of sites so just after some advice on which is a good site if someone has fixed theres?

Yes it has sound, my brother gave me all the brand new cables etc from his new one so it is the actual box, from what I have read so far it looks like they overheat and I presume the joints go bad inside.

but i thought when they overheat you get the rrod, if you get sound and no pic i would think it would be the cables, do you have the option of fitting the rca cables instead of the scart socket

 

may even be a scart prob in the back of the xbox

 

if it is the rrod, im sure someone done a fix with pennies and posted it on this site

if the console aint too old you can phone microsoft and they will normaly repair it for free well they did with mine and my console was bout a year old so i would try them first. as longs as its not been chipped

I have tried both rca and scart and its the same with both the old and new cables.

 

I am still learning about xboxes, I always said I would never buy one as a devote Sony fan, but when I got offered one for free I could'nt resist getting it and seeing if I could fix it.

If I get it going it will keep the kids off my PS3.

Its not been chipped, but it is a few years old will be out of warranty by now.

you dont know untill you try and phone microsoft because it was a fault with them and they did try and recalled most of them back to fix them but some people never sent them back because they was working at the time so i would try them they should fix it or if not they probaly wont charge much.

There's quite a common fault that causes this along with the red rings problem.

Usually the graphics chip comes loose and taking off the heatsink and cleaning it up, pressing down the chip and putting new compound on will sort it.

Nothing to lose anyway :)

I think this happened to me....just sound...i have to tv's one 720p one 1080p...when used on the 1080p i adjusted the settings to 1080p,,,,but when i used it on the 720p tv i couldnt get no picture as it was set to 1080p and my 720p tv couldnt handle it......so i had to connect it back to the 1080p tv and adjust the settings back tom 720p.....hope this makes sense:p......may not be your problem,but you never know....

Yes they do that as they can't handle a higher resolution than designed for.

He said it was already broke when he was given it so unlikely but you never know.

Have spoken to a friend who said that if the console is within three years old then Microsoft will fix it for free, guess what?? its three years and three weeks old.

 

After some more research it does look like its the solder joints on the GPU that goes bad due to the heat, so I am going to buy a repair kit on ebay, think they are about £2.50 and hopefully that should sort it.

It is only 3 years if you get RROD according to http://support.microsoft.com

Also its from the date it was purchased, so if the date on the back of the xbox is 3yrs 3wks ago then you would stand a good chance of it still being covered.

I will have to look at that then, I know it needs to get the RROD for it to be covered, but it can be forced into that easily enough.

well easy fix if its just 3 lights bud and cheep to do !! all u need num 5 washers from b&q and thermal paste i will get u the link i ues to fix all mine
