Hi, Im Rich aka trick from west sussex, I have a 1991 300zx lwb twin turbo, Im partner in a garage, my 300 is going to be our promo car but we have a problem, 300's are new to us as we only ever work on skylines, Our problem is this, I thought mine had been converted to mph but now my friends bought a series 2 (1995 model) and his is still in kph but his clocks are the same as mine, what should the clocks read? can somebody please help me???? Also do the series 1 or 2 300zx's have an oil light? as the dials in both cars have been played about with, luckly for me I know mine are the original and the milage is correct as I have all the history of the car even from when it was in japan but my friend has just found out his has got non turbo dials in his, major bummer as the milage could be anything, if someone is able to answer this question please tell me. Many thanks

from 1995 the turbo cars didnt have a turbo gauge

conversion to mph done by:

1. converter box soldered on back of speedo, usually put a mph sticker on face of clocks, dial will read to 180

2. fit UK clocks (obvious as will show both kph and mph)

3. change dial to one that reads up to 120mph

The clocks read 180 on both cars so does this mean they are correct? sorry if I sound stupid

if they only have one scale that goes up to 180, they are japanese clocks. they may or may not have been converted. and the person that converted them may or may not have altered the milage to corespond.

if they have the converter fitted then both the speed and milage will read in miles

converter will be attached to back of speedo small black box or heatshrink package with 4 wires , spliced into loom to speado

Got ya, that means mines been done as I know my milage has been changed to miles from all the history I have, this is the bit I dont understand, my friends one definately not been done, what is the highest speed be showing on the dials for mph, also any help on the oil light question?

the cheapest easiest and most common conversion involves leaving the japanese dials in place, they read up to 180kph. the converter alters the signal sent to the speedo from the gearbox so that the speed shown is in miles not km

oil lights:

they have 2 oil lights, one is diff oil, cant remember what the other one is. neither as far as i know is actual engine oil, that is shown on the oil gauge only.

as far as i know this is the same on all models

Ok ive now been told two different things, to set my mind at rest could someone please tell me what the highest speed on the speedo dial should be for mph eg 120 or 180?

If it has original Japanese clocks it will read up to 180.

Whether this is KPH or MPH depends on whether it has had a convertor box fitted.

If it doesn't that's 180kph and if it does that's now 180mph.

Japanese cars are restricted to 120mph so the other way of converting it is to replace the dials with a set that go up to 120mph. This means if you ever removed the restrictor your needle would go off the scale.

UK cars all came with 180mph clocks as far as I know.
