I was wondering if anyone has either installed home CCTV or has looked into it.

I won't go into details but its become clear someone nearby has the knife in me and me pa and are resorting to damaging cars etc.... No idea why! We get along very well with our close neighbours and have done nothing to upset anyone, but alas someone wants to make trouble!

Therefore we need a CCTV system. We need something to cover outside our wall, and maybe three angles of our garden (pretty big).

Its all pretty confusing as i'm only just getting into it - so was hoping someone may be able to help as they have done something similar.

It needs to have fairly good quality pictures as we want to catch this tw@t! But we can't be paying out a fortune. We were thinking of about £400 - is that totally unrealistic?

Thanks in advance for any and all help :)

Thanks Iain :D But it looks as though we may be sorted now. Would still appreciate an opinion tho just incase we need to upgrade one of the cameras or something :)

Just a quick point to make when I was in the market for CCTV. Some of the cheaper DVR's (recorders) display the live image at a good resolution but record it at a lower resolution making the playback image poor. Worth checking

Mine displays and records at 720 x 576

Phil what price do you call cheap for a DVR?

Thanks Phil i will be sure to ask about that

i have 4 cameras around my house as i had loads of trouble with kids on my utility room roof when i first moved in. i brought a cheap setup from ebay which came with the 4 cameras and a controller. all cameras have an inbuilt pir sensor and microphones so you can hear the little f*****s aswell. I have a small alleyway down the side of my house which unfortunately caught something on tape that i didn't really want to see.... My neighbours teenage kid getting rather intimate with his missus who was bent over the alley fence! i just can't help but smile at him and laugh to myself when i see him! Especially after i told him that i had a timelapse video recorder and a hidden camera pointing down the ally! the look on his face was priceless!

LOL when i was on the phone to the police (just to get everything on record) i said we are looking into CCTV, he said make sure you don't infringe people civil rights by having them pointed into Mrs Smiths bedroom etc.... I said actually we have retired nuns living over the road from us - copper, oh my! don't even go there   Good bloke actually had a good laugh with him, still friggin useless tho unfortuneately LOL.

Well we took the plunge today and got a good system. Travelled to Blackpool to see it all in action, really great helpful bloke! Really good quality images etc.....

Got 4 outdoor cameras, a 160GB DVR which records for 14days and then goes over itself if nothing has happened. It also records ALL 4 channels rather than the quad screen, so you can review every camera separately. Got all the necessary cables, including an extra long one that we required, remote, monitor etc.... Just everything we need. They are also infrared, so when it goes dark it goes black and white but everything is dead clear even when its pitch black :D

Its worked out well so far, gotta get fitting everything now :D

Thanks everyone for the help, much appreciated :duffer:

Vijay - PM shortly mate ;)

Sounds a good system mate, nice one:D

Yep sure is Chris, have now sorted the first 2 cameras and they are up and running. Gone dark now tho so will sort the rest tomorrow.

Nah don't mine mate :)

160GB DVR, capable of 14 days of 4 seperate channels of recording.

LCD Monitor.

4x Outdoor Cameras (which are infrared and turn to black and white when it goes dark).

4x 15 Meter cables to go from cameras to main unit.

Remote control for main unit.

2x Power packs for the unit and monitor etc.....

And obviously all the software, instructions and any other cables needed.

We also got a special 30 Meter cable made up as we need to mount a camera a fair distance from the house.

So the total for us was £408 and we are fitting it ourselves, as altho it is time comsuming it is very simple to do.

HTH mate

justa note on this , i was having trouble with a druggie breaking into my garage ...i fixed a remote motion sensor to a tree trunk down my drive , ( nice and hidden ) and the remote alarm sounder in my bedroom ..i trimmed the sensativitity to not pick up anything smaller than a large dog and waited .....the look on his face at 3 am when he came out of my garage and was suddenly confronted by a semi naked 15 stone angry bloke with a baseball bat in his hand (me ) was priceless........funny , i never saw him again and it only cost me 20 quid from ebay and 2 x 9volt bateries
