Graphics Tablets: thinking about getting one, any advice?

Thinking about getting a graphics tablet as I do a LOT of work on Photoshop (both touching up photos, more intense graphic design work and also full on arty farty nonsense for my art practice).

Absolutely clueless about them so grabbed half an hour this evening looking up the subject. Came to a few conclusions:

1. Wacom appears to be a good name to go for.

2. You can get a combined Tablet/mouse affair if you want

3. Bigger is not necessarily better ie the bigger the tablet screen the more you have to move your arm.

I "think" a 6x8 would be about right for me but the price of the Intuos3 nearly knocked me for 6. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it or any other tablet and could give me a bit of buying advice? Hoping to shell out on a new i7 based system in the New Year as my main computer has just died (thank you for coming to my rescue Dave if you're reading this mate...was tearing my hair out at what to do! :))so with that plus the car costing me a small fortune and the album needing paying, for funds are a bit limited but I am royally fed up at struggling with the mouse for fine "free hand" work plus I'm starting to develop a touch of RSI which is really ticking me off so something needs to be done. :(

Cheers,

Leigh.

Hi Leigh!

How's it going mate? Hope you and Lucy are keeping well and out of trouble ... ;)

Up until about 3 years ago I used a Wacom tablet and can't recommend them enough. The things you need to look into is not just how big the tablet is but also what the resolution is that it supports, how many pressure levels it has and what software packages it supports. In my personal opinion, a smaller tablet is fine so long as the tablet supports high resolutions. It means you move your hand/arm less and can do more detailed work (especially handy if you work in Photoshop a lot with zoomed in artwork). I must admit that I haven't kept up with recent developments in this area so can't recommend a specific model of tablet but can honestly say that if you go down the route of a Wacom you won't be disappointed.

All the best chap - regards to Lucy - and we need to get together again for a drink/meal!

Cheerio!

I would say to get a Wacom off eBay. A5 or A4, the A4 being prefered. Don't go for another make, because all the big applications support wacom drivers and nothing else. Make sure you get a USB one and stick to the Intuos range (intuos 3 is actually quite uncomfortable to use so go for 1 or 2).

I honestly have to say from owning a wacom that it was a great tablet but you just can't get the fine detail on the A5 you would on an A4, A3 is maybe a little bit big

Cheers folks, much appreciated :) Will be having a look on Ebay tonight to see what's going...I'm definitely thinking a Wacom A4 sized tablet if the budget will stretch to it...

Danny: Alright chap! It's been a bit of a weird couple of months tbh which is why I've been a bit quiet on here. Ended up in hospital again for 3 weeks after the docs decided to stop my meds (long story!). Got out a few weeks ago now but it's only last week, after they finally restarted the treatment, that I've begun to feel remotely human again! In other words...same old, same old! lol :D Ahh, you've got to laugh haven't you? ;) Hope things are well in the Zaat household and once Lucie manages to extricate herself from the Xmas rush of clients a drink, a meal and a bit of normality sounds like a ruddy good idea! :D
