I have a jap import which had a KPH clock in it, I changed it for a MPH clock and I was told that this simple change would mean I wouldnt have to get a de-restricting thingy for the capped top speed. But funny things have happend...the rev counter seams to give an average reading and doesnt increase and decrease when you rev the engine, Ive mentioned in another thread that my overdrive stopped working the engine note changed immediately as it would but it took a good 3 minutes for the rev counter to go from 2000 to 3000 revs. and the damn thing is still restricted! the car will accelerate smoothly and rapidly but when it gets to about 96mph the engine cuts out untill your speed has dropped, anyone any ideas? the original speedo had had the bypass done to stop the chimes but besides that everything was standard

thanks

Fred

speed limiter cap is done by the ecu not the speedo. The bypass thing may be the problem, speed cut should be 112mph

well this is definitely cutting out at 96. and I thought just changing the clocks would fix it, if its the ECU what do I need to do to stop it doing this

aftermarket ecu chips will usually remove speed limiter . I'd look at sorting your other problems first though. Did you have any probs before changing the clocks?

No mate, not a thing, really can't understand this at all it obviously did cut out with the KPH clocks but I didn't really take too much notice of the exact speed, so I need to re chip the ecu then? any ideas on the rev counter?

perhaps the clocks are faulty. The reverse gear thing that happened was that also after you changed the clocks? Aftermarket chips usually remove speed limiter, more suited to uk fuel, rev limit raised, fuel maps optimised. Do a search on here loads of info on chips etc. There's a few people on here that socket and chip ecu's

Yes the reverse gear problem was after the clock change, surely they cant be linked, and the problem wasn't immediate, I really cant understand the gearbox thing there was no reason for all that to happen at once

Ive also noticed that when I first start the engine of a morning the power light flashes for about 5 seconds before it goes out, dont know if this means anything

uk clocks do remove the 112mph limit, so your problem is elsewhere

i disagree :)

:confused::confused::cry::cry:

fitting uk clocks does not remove the speed limiter as that is controled by the ecu. the signal from the speed sensor goes via the clocks to the ecu, changing the clocks does not change the signal going on to the ecu.

the adapter/chip/converter/bypass that you fit to the back of jap clocks to make them read in miles fools the ecu into thinking you are going slower than you are (thus "raising" the limit point)

when my auto box blew (wouldnt change up to top gear) my rev counter did funny things (may not be attal relevant)

your limit point being at 96mph may be due to poorly adjusted new speedo (adjustment pots inside) get a gps and compare speeds
