Hi,

I'm trying to get some files off an old laptop running windows 95. There is no USB connector and the floppy doesn't work. It has a parallel and seriel connector but that's about it :( Any ideas?

Thanks

Vijay

Get a Hard drive enclosure from ebay (they cost £5 - £10)

Then just plug it into another PC and it will behave like another drive.

Cheers guys. No network card port on it so can't connect it that way or connect to the net. Was hoping to do it without buying anything as it's not my laptop but seems the only way :(

The file system difference shouldnt affect you.

One other way is you can set up a one way network through parallel ports on both the laptop and your main PC, using whats called "direct connection" its now little used and mostly forgotten about but i believe its still part of XP.

However the easiest would probably be with a 2.5" hard disk enclosure, they are fairly cheap and of course reusable - stick a 40 or 80gb hard disk in there when your finished and youve effectivly got a big usb powered pen drive!

how much info do you want to get off the drive ? as in size. if you send me the drive, i can put it on dvd for you. the offer is there if needed.

By far the easiest way is to get the HD enclosure (already mentioned by Rat2611) off eBay if you aren't in a major hurry. I have one of these and use it all the while. Also, when you're done you'll have a nice portable HD that you can upgrade to a bigger drive whenever you like!

My enclosure cost 99p plus 4 quid delivery. One word of advice though - if you do go for one of these, don't buy one that mentions SATA! If your laptop is old it definitely won't have a SATA HD.

sorry to butt in but i took the hard drive out of me old pc for safety can you tell me how i can access the info on it?

Plug it into your new one, assuming it's the correct interface type.

Just bung it in another PC mate - there should be a spare data and power connector in there. Then, when you boot back up it should detect the drive and put it as your next available drive letter. You can then drag and drop to your heart's content!

thanks AndyP and Splitfyr3 for replys but that info is lost on me! got a new pc so dont really want to open it up and i kept the wires that were on the hardrive and they dont match up with any i can see, was hoping for something relatively easy i could plug it into and thats it. computers!:smash:
