HELP!!!

Does anyone on here know anything about laptop screens, I left my laptop on the floor and the dog sat on it and broke the screen :shock:I bought a second hand 1 off ebay and although it works the pictures very faint, except around the bottom where it seems to be a lot brighter at both ends (about 1 inch wide) and in the middle (about 3 inch wide) a little like the screen is letting in light, is the screen fooked? can the brightness be altered from within windows, I can lighten and darken it using the function buttons but it doesnt go bright enough, any help would be appreciated

is it the exact same model screen ?. i have found that even though some laptops are the same model, they have used 2 or 3 different brands of screens in them for some strange reason. it does sound like the backlights goosed, could have been in a damp place which sends them funny.

it is a different screen, same resolution (WXGA), but I was assured it is compatible and all relevant websites seem to agree, is the backlight seperate? The long white thing across the bottom of the lid housing attached to the screen by 2 wires? or is it an intergral part of the screen?

You might be able to swap the backlight but it sounds like its already a knackered one.

Whats a knackered one? the screen?

Does the backlight look to be working OK across the width of the screen when the case is off?

If not the backlight might have gone.

If the backlight is nice and bright then the LCD panel must be faulty.

Screen brightness is hardware controlled from the keyboard usually so if it won't go any brighter with that then it's unlikely any windows brightness utility will make a difference.

This maybe a silly question, do you have your power pluged into your laptop? Sometime tey will only go so bright if you give it direct power from the mains,

But if that doesn't work looks like you for a knackered screen mate

As a last resort you could buy a external flat LCD monitor and plug it in and use that. ;)

Claim on your house insurance Pete, for a new replacement seeing as your dog sat on it.New for old.

Tried that mate, but couldnt find any paperwork to prove I own it!!! anyways got a claim ongoing for a new plasma going through and if the laptop were to take half as long as that it would be outdated and unusable:D

Actually tried that but it wouldnt work, Anyways its not too portable then, Ive actually got a Toshiba NP-Q1 with wifi radar installed for ultimate portability but I really like the laptop (HP Pavilion DV6000) so I may sell the toshiba to finance the new screen

Shame really I like them HP pavilions. I was going to get one but it was just outside my buget so got this Equium instead. The Tosh is good but as in my previous thread....I am not happy with Vista.

Good luck with it Pete.

No I hate Vista as well, Im using it on another laptop at the moment, and I cant stand it, the Toshiba is XP though, the pavilion is XP and I suppose changing after youve got used to something doesnt help much but I genuinely believe Vistas a great white elephant
