hard work to train -

likes to nibble things when over excited any good ideas on how to stop him ????

he does listen when i tell him but then forgets again

He's not forgetting he's testing. They are hugely intelligent, and very cheeky!!!! We thought ours might be deaf for a while coz he was choosing when to listen and then when not to!

There are a lot of techniques to stop the "mouthing" but the one that worked for me is "scruff shaking". When they do something wrong, hold them by the scruff of the neck and pull their head off your hand/arm etc. Not too hard but don't be afraid of being forceful, it won't hurt them at all, we've all seem mothers carry thier pups like this. Say the word "No" at the same time to re-inforce it as a negative.

Have a search for Akita training on the net there's some really good info out there.

They are handsome looking dogs, apart from the curly tail im not keen on personally. First thing with any dog training is to understand a dogs natural behaviour and work on that, he will except being the under dog if you get on top of him in the first place but its an on going thing to keep them there, its not cruel its natural in a pack and thats what your mimicking.

I used to have an english mastiff, he was gigantic even at 6 months he was huge and as strong as an ox. Was in the pub with him, i was sitting on a stool and had the dog sitting on my right whilst holding the lead in my left hand with it across my lap, then the bugger decides to bolt off round the back of me and to my left spinning me round off the stool and halfway across the floor, beer everywhere, im not a small bloke either, it just goes to show how strong some dogs can be.

Is'nt that where you reward them with a treat for doing as there told?
