Hi,

My neighbour has just received her new screen and it has a single dead pixel. Should she return the screen or is it quite normal to have a few? It's 19" TFT LCD screen.

Cheers

Vijay

Check the Manual/Documentation. Some will say to expect a few dead pixels and some companies offer a "no dead pixel" gaurantee.

get it taken back, she is quite within her rights legally to do so and if its not right and shes not happy it does not matter how big or small the problem is she has her rights

one dead pixel is NOT a reason for taking it back

VERY FEW retailers would entertain you, its acceptable policy for lcds, they would end up with a shop full of screens, however as you say she JUST bought it is there not a 7/14 day returns policy?

It all depends on the iso level it's manufactured to. Iso level 1 is the highest i think which gaurentees no dead pixels, lower levels allow up to a number of dead pixels to pass.

My mac 23 inch cinema display at 900 quid has one dead pixel :(

There is an app called pixelbuddy I believe that will tell you how bad it is...HTH

the law reguarding dead pixels on screens allows any screen to have a maximum of 5 dead pixels, any higher than 5 and they must replace it. cab will also explain this to you. they are not obliged to replace any screen with 5 or lower dead pixels.

i had to go through this with a client not long ago who had bought a screen from pc world and they had told him the same thing.

Get some baby oil and a cotton bud and try massaging the pixel back to life, I've unstuck a few before. (Also made no differnce to some but he who dares Rodney :D )

my 19" pc monitor has one dead pixel but you kind of get used to it after a while.

my mate kept taking the pee out of it, until he bought a new pc from pc world and had the same problem

Fair play to PC World Business. An email was sent off and they have arranged for a new one to be delivered and the old one collected with no fuss at all :)

TFT Dead Pixel Allowances

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LCD Displays are made up of a fixed number of pixels. Each pixel is made from 3 sub-pixels: one red, one blue and one green. Each sub pixel has its own transistor, so the manufacturing process to produce a TFT panel is highly complex. Due to this process, defects can occur at any time during the life of the panel. These defects cannot be fixed or replaced.

To regulate the acceptability of defects and to protect the end user, ISO have created a standard for manufacturers to follow. ISO-13406-2 recommends how many pixel faults are acceptable before a panel can be replaced.

The table below shows the allowable number of malfunctioning pixels that are acceptable, depending on the native resolution of the LCD and allowing for 2 malfunctioning pixels per million pixels.

All TFT Monitors sold by Aria fall into Class II - see the details below.

Our panel fits ISO13406-2 Spec in Class II

Class II is the common class for consumer equipment.

Class I is for Military, Hospital or other Critical applications

Class II specifies Allowable defect as follows: Allowable missing pixels per million pixels on display.

Class a) Pixels always lit b) Pixels never lit c) Sub-pixel: Always lit;

never lit or blinking.

I 0 0 0

II 2 2 5

III 5 15 50

IV 50 150 500

(figures shown represent faulty pixels per million)
