I'm hoping someone can help me here....!

I bought a 300ZX twin turbo Jap import a couple of days ago and I love it. Only problem with it is (and it's a bit of a problem) that the speedo doesn't work - at all. The guy I bought it from said that it was sticking between 0 and 30 but it didn't budge at all on the 100 mile journey home and I must have been going over 100mph at times. He reckoned it was the kph/mph converter behind the dash playing up....

Does anyone have any ideas on this? Anyone know what needs to be done to sort it out? I can't spend too much longer going past speed cameras at about 15mph just in case they go off!!!

Cheers,

Christian

Search is your friend buddy, its a common problem on Zeds. Yes it could be the converter or even the speed sensor. Does the steering go heavy??

Thanks for super-quick post!

The steering is really light (although I'm still getting used to the whole car to be honest!) but the speedo doesn't budge an inch. I'm hoping it's not going to be expensive.....

Would you take it to a 300ZX import specialist? I need to sort it quite soon as it's pretty illegal (and I want to see the speedo needle fly up when the turbos kick in!!!)

I dont think it is illegal to have a non working speedo, even if it is, its hardly like they can test for it.

Is it not illegal?

Well, either way I'd like one.

I'm not a mechanic by any stretch.... do you reckon I should get a new convertor fitted or try some local garages (if I can find one that I could trust further than I could throw (and I can't throw anything very far))??

Does it clock up the miles when you drive? If it doesnt then its the speed sensor playing up on the auto box. Might be the connections to it under the car.

a convertor alters the feed to the odometer too, if the chip is faulty that will likely be dead too.

I honestly cannot believe how quick and helpful you guys are!

The miles aren't clocking up - no. I've officially gone 0 miles since I picked it up (about 160 in reality). Still reading 77088 - I wonder how long it's been like that....

So is that likely to be the converter then? Will a new one be the best option?

Thanks again people
