having real probs with this at the min, my internet is stupidly slow considering im paying £25 per month for broadband (and i only go on this site!!!).

rang them last week to which the reply was "there is something wrong with your computer". so i ran "killdisk" and wiped everything then reloaded it all.................still running slow!!!!!!!!

just rung them now to which i was told "turn off your norton, turn off your firewall, and see if that helps"! he then wanted me to monitor my computer for a day and "see how it goes"!

anyway after playing up with them he eventually ran some test from his end (so to speak) and came back saying "so mr welsh i can see from my tests that you have been proved correct, there is some line problem. i will forward this to the technical department who will contact you ..........in the next 2 days!!!". (and he cant guarantee that i will be getting any adjustment to my bill after the probs im having)

why does it take a week of ringing tiscali help desk in india before you get anywhere???

any one else had problems with them, or suggest a better server?

i set it up about a year ago so i know you can get it cheaper now, but i know its for unlimited download at 1mb, no calls included though.

I had seriously Slow tiscali too, i have 2mb unlimited for only £17.99 a month.

go here to test speed http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk/ is was runnin at about 345kbps which is way slow, they then told me a little trick which i tried and i now connect at 2.34Mbps ;) what they told me to do is to go into start then run, type in the window msconfig and hit enter, then the system config window opens, de-select 'load startup items' then hit apply, close the window. it will then ask to restart, when it restarted it was like havin a new comp hehe. but do this at your own risk, but i affected NOTHING on my comp. HTH

You gettin all clued up on the techno lingo now Mike?

Having the same trouble with Tiscali myself at the moment. I'm on the 2mb package for £17.99 a month but only connecting at 500 or so kbps at best! :(

This thread prompted me to get on the phone to Tiscali today but the situation hasn't improved:

I'm using the advised RJ11 cable and filter; my PC should easily be able to cope with the speed; there are no programs/adware/spyware running, hidden or otherwise that would effect the speed; I've tried disabling the firewall and AVG; there are no P2P programs running; I've disabled the internal modem; I've used Tiscali's "Optimizer" program to configure my system; used Bandits suggestion of disabling the "load start-up items" and I've even changed the phone line and also taken the filter out of the equation to see if it they were at fault but all to no avail! :headvswal

TBH I don't know what else to do :( Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated guys!

when i rang tiscali yesterday a voice message was played saying:

"due to high call volumes waiting times could be high. unless your issue is urgent please ring back tomorrow".

my guess is a few people are having issues with them!

when i do run the speedcheck i get speed connections going from 138kbps - 322kbps..........i know this isnt worth £25 a month! not sure whether to cancel my broadband and sign up with someone else???

Nope. Filter in BT wall socket to RJ11 cable to modem to USB connector in laptop. Not got any faxes, hubs etc connected and the only other USB device is the mouse! It's doing my nut in!

Have you made sure you don't have any spyware/viruses?

Yup:

Okay, sorry didn't read it though very properly :) How long is the RJ11 cable from the wall to the modem? And is the phone jack (or whatever you call it :)) that you use on the base floor?

The cable is quite long as it runs from one room into another (about 15ft or so). On the base floor? Um...do you mean is it on the floor? If so, then no, it hangs from the BT wall socket. :) Do you think the cable length might be a factor then?

Yes, the cable can have quite a big impact on the speed, if I would be you I would hook up a couputer directly with a short cable (4feet max) and thest the speed.

Cheers for that mate, will do! :) Trouble is, I've got to keep the computer in the same place...would you recommend going for a wireless router maybe?

Yep, wireless is a good idea, myself I have a wireless router (D-Link) and a wireless extender hooked wirelessly to it. I used to have an 8meg DSL line, and had no drop in speed at all :) The price has come down quite nicely on the wireless systems too, and I would recommend you to buy a 54 Meg system or higher. If you live in a densely built-up area, you want to put up encryption on it, or you will be sharing your Internet connection with your neighbours. :)

Cheers mate, I'll look into it and see if I can find a good one!

But try with a shorter RJ11 cable and i.e. a laptop (borrow one from you neighbour/friend if you don't own one) first, to make sure it really helps, so you won't put out money on something which doesn’t help. But I would say that you should get a nice increase in speed by using a shorter cable, be sure to use a high quality/undamaged one :)

changed mine from a 15ft cable to a 15inch cable and still no change

Got to admit my Tiscali is fine, connecting at 2.3Mbs and only paying £12.50 for it a month!!! Got a nice bit of discount through work though.

Okay :( Well the error have to be somewhere else then, you could call your ISP and ask them to make a speed check. They usually try to avoid the problems, if there are any, so force them to make that check. I had 0.25 meg line for a month and a half months only because they didn't want to check the condition of the line, and when they did they realized that there where something wrong with it. So now I got my 2 meg back, but I'm still waiting for them to exchange the telephone cable to the nearest ADSL central so that I could get my 8 meg back...

There should be a quite big speed drop if you use a 15ft RJ11 cable, but your speed may be so slow already that it wont affect it.

Alot of the problem with speed and a dodgy connection is down to the distance that you are away from the BT Telephone exchange, and the condition of the cables coming into your house from the pole in the road, Thats down to BT not Tiscali, you need to get in touch with BT and ask them to send out a test engineer and do a db (desible) loss check on your line.

I live a long way from the exchange, so i cant have anything faster than the standard 500kb connection, and that keeps dropping down because of the overloading issues that Tiscali have (i was with tiscali for 3 months then got it cancelled because of this).

So i changed to NTL and i now have a 3Mb connection, its nearly as fast as my Z.... And it dont breakdown as much as the Z, LOL.

Just found out something else to make me even more p1ssed off with Tiscali...they're blocking p2p ports, limiting them to 1-6k a second. To quote from a site I've just read:

"they're running a packet sniffer on people with what they term as 'excessive' download usage.

When you send or recieve data of any type on the internet, it is split into small segments called packets. What a packet sniffer does is to examine each packet that is sent, and see what type of information is in it.

By doing this they can easily just disgard packets that are known to belong to P2P software programs. They drop enough to keep your speed down to say 5k a sec"

B@stards.

Glad my contract is up as I'm thinking it's time to move ISP's.
